yeah, in hilly races he is very good. A genuine contender.
I don't believe he is the GC/GT guy some people think he is tho.

I agree that when his careers is over his best results will have come in the classics, but he's really only had one full shot at being a GT GC guy.

A candidate for the win but I'm not certain the downhill finish is his best chance. Lovquist yes but Uran? I'm not so sure on this course.

i wouldn't say he already is a contender for the big monuments. he is 1 year younger then costa this guys need some time to develop and adapt to this kind of races. thats why i say that putting all your eggs on a 23 year old basket may not the be the smartest option. i would have gone with lofkvist if i was sky tbh

 He was not in the first chase group, not in the 2nd one and not in the 3rd one.

He did not have the legs today. He should have known it, period.

Remind me again why they shouldn't have backed him? Muppet.

plus the inevitable clinic topic of "Is Zaugg's win a sign of a clean peloton?"

Meh, him riding for Saunier Duval and Gerolsteiner kind of speaks against him

He came pretty close to Basso on Kronplatz even though he had been working for Arroyo and had nothing to fight for in the tt.

And he was with the heads of state on both Luz and Plateau.

So he has shown good stuff in gts too.

Depends who you scouted. If he thought the big threats were the likes of Sánchez and Cunego, then he probably looked at them, decided they were probably in trouble and that should be taken advantage of; maybe they thought other riders were bluffing or didn't treat them as seriously as threats as they should have done.

That's part of the beauty of Classics racing. You have to watch so many people, know when to stick and when to twist. Sky had a go today, and it didn't come off. Shame for them, but if you give up the second it doesn't look like being your day, then it would be a mighty boring race for the last 200km as 180 riders climb off and get into the team car.

Luz and Plateau should not be used as comparisons to GC riding in a gt. Terrible racing.

I just dont rate him in regards to GT/GC, maybe a potential top 10 guy but I see a lot more potential in other riders in a similar age group.

Kronplatz was good, but it is a lot easier to do well on a stage or two in a GT rather then deliver throughout 3 weeks.

Haha, our Singaporian Prophet Dwlssonic could be right :p!

I was wrong unfortunately:(
The climb was too hard for him and they raced really hard on that climb breaking it into pieces. He looked good at first but couldn't hold on to the later parts.
The ardennes suits him better

So in this edition we do and Zaugg will soon win a GT.

Plateau and Luz Ardiden are easy climbs too. What is next, maybe because Contador was weak then the field in itself was weak too. So maybe the riders who came in the lead group are maybe not good climbers after all.

For a GT recuperation is paramount. Especially in that third week. Very few people have it. Either you are a very gifted rider or you have a very good doctor. That's Uran's problem IMHO.

ma chi cazzo e oliver zaugg?

i wasn't watching rai,did alessandra say it again?she really should have lol.you can't get a more shocking win than this one.pretty sick acceleration by zaugg,so yeah he deserved it.

it was a good edition of lombardia, kind of too much headwind though and too many guys with little form(even gilbert ran off batteries).that's one of the reasons zaugg dropped them all i guess.

Enjoyed the race. It's one of the really scenic ones so I'm glad it wasn't raining this time.

We had lots of good racing and good race threads this season. Thanks to everybody for contributing:)

Thanks for the more balanced response but still I don't agree. Cunego and Sánchez were not in a good day and it was obvious from the first climbs. Cunego has been ill for weeks. It's not hard to check out if some of your opponents are in a better shape than you, it's also the basics of the sport, actually. The climbs were already an indication.

Uran was not 4th or 7th, he was ... 19th !!! And Lofkvist 20th.

Would love it personally. These domestique rides are a disgrace to the sport.

OK, so what is Sky to do? They've got as many guys in the lead group as anybody else, just let Nibali go and go for the Bruyneel approach ("we had four guys in the top 20, isn't that AMAZING??")?

In the words of Óscar Freire, "in order to win you must first be prepared to lose". Sky tried to win today, but they lost. Still, would you have rather the four guys all sat up as soon as Rigo felt slightly less than 100%? Did Katyusha have 4 guys in there? I only counted 3 and J-Rod was clearly bluffing at the back on the flat. Euskaltel had 3, but 2 were designated leaders of whom one was feeling bad, and they still toasted Txurruka on the front, where's the post-mortem for them?

Jeez, when I am defending Sky against you and calling into question Euskaltel as part of my defence, you know something's not right.
