That was a weird race.

That's why I love PR the most; of all the classics, PR has the most potential for being, well, 'weird'.

JS, well deserved win. If you are out there all day, and stay away, good for you. A hell of a win.

I think it very telling Thor was so off the podium; you'd think w/Johann out there and everyone else having to pull but him, he would have been a no-brainer for 2nd. He just didn't have it. Didn't ride poorly, but if the final would have played out as hoped, with FC, Boonen, Thor, etc on the Carrefour, no way would he have been a factor. Hope he gets a stage or two in the Tour but his foray in the classics as world champ has been a bust.

I found how far this race was from being 'on form' to be really incredible. What entertainment; could not take my eyes of the it. I had 6 hard core cycling fans here watching the last 3 hours, and though the hoped for Boonen/FC/Thor/etc battle never took place, not one person here was disappointed. A great race.

They are all such great riders. They should have certainly been up there today...

Klemme was 14th last year
Wagner was great support in E3
Weylandt was looking strong in Ghent
Posthuma is a great rouleur (maybe not classics rider though)

I think especially Klemme will be a very good classics rider in the years to come

I can recall a small notification after Arenberg that O'Grady was struck by a flat tire and had lost contact. I think I saw him in the Boonen group up to the point where there was that big crash. I'm guessing he either got dropped later on or got held up right there.

Yeah could be I didn't see him much at all so I didn't know what had happened to him

That's also my opinion - the race would probably have been much harder.

Well, we do know that Canc would have had one more rider to help bridge, and yes, the race would likely have ended very differently.

At least I can put my photo album away now (until the GTs, maybe). :D

But first:
Congratulations to Johan Van Summeren!

Wow, she looks like a bumpier ride than the cobbles. I guess he gets some good training in during his off time.

Hushovd and Ballan definitely didn't do anything wrong, but I also think sitting up was the perfect tactic by Cancellara. His gamble that Garmin badly wanted Hushovd in the front group was a good one. Garmin just got lucky (for want of a better word) that Van Summeren made the final split in the front group.

That's how I read it, too. I wanted Cancellera to win, but could see he was too well marked. He had to wait until that lengthy rise came up, where he knew he could give it the gas and drop them, and did. By then it was too late, but just barely. Another k, maybe less, he'd have gotten back on.

As it is, though, I was glad to see Van Summeren win. He worked like a madman, and rode well. I have to say, when he was sharing the victory with his girlfriend/wife it broke me up a little.

Great display of tactics by Garmin, too: the world champion marking Cancellara, while his teammate in the lead group is given orders to gun it and go. Garmin used a team to beat a machine. The machine, meanwhile, fought bravely, got a well deserved second, and was gracious in defeat.

Even though my guy didn't win, I thought it was an exceptional race.

She's better looking that Mrs Brunyeel who looks like an aging Bulgarian Hooker.

Seriously, I always wonder about bike racers/vs/rock stars. Ultra hot girlfriends typically can only handle so many nights of "Sorry honey, I just rode 8 hours today...". Answer: <poutingly> "You love riding that bike more than me!!".

She is just SMOKINGLY hot. wow. I wish I had that 'problem'.
:p

Anyway...

Thanks for a fun morning everyone!
Good thread.

I'm gonna go throw a few punches in The Clinic; make myself a huge breakfast; then jump on my bike!
