Why is Betancur not riding this?

He's in the basque country where he just put in his best ride of the season, before inevitably sucking again the next few weeks

Greipel very lively today. If he's got such good form, not sure why he doesn't just save his energy for once and try to win a sprint.

His engine wont last that long.
How would he know that though? Every year he does a load of pointless attacks which are never going to do anything. Surely better to just try to save energy and see how far it will take you - especially when you have sprint like he does.

Because he will just be dropped if he doesn't anticipate the big moves. There's a reason he's pulled back effortlessly each time someone behind ups the pace.

It would be great to see the Gorilla in the mix in the finale, though.

I think you're right, but I don't think that Greipel himself thinks that he has any chance, hence he just wastes energy on pointless attacks.

Boonen's efforts always wasted because the group slows down on the tarmac and everyone comes together

No chance for Sagan to get the new team wheel.

Does the team wheel have a huge difference?

It can make a difference, get used to the way one wheel behaves and then suddenly you get a wheel you've never used before half way through a big race would make some difference

Yeah, unless if the race is very conservative he will just get dropped.

I think Greipel knows his own abilities pretty well. There's a reason why he's stopped riding MSR.

Is he riding on disc brakes, or decided against in the end?
Most ride on traditional brakes, easier to get a wheel change
Yeah, makes sense especially for this race. I know earlier in the season he was considering discs (at least publically, under pressure from Specialized) for PR. Was claiming something about being able to run wider tires and better braking - so was wondering if that was just marketing guff or if he actually followed through with it.

Yeah, thanks for that! :p :)

Not pointless at all, he's riding at a constant pace instead of constantly accelerating and slowing down again
