Route

Pretty meh. No real good Ardennes stage this year. There is the cobblen stage and some chance of echelons, but most likely we'll see a lot of bunch sprints and the TT / Cobble stages will decide everything.

Stage 1: Heerenveen - Bolsward (177km)
Flat. Not even a speed bump. It's in the north of the Netherlands. Mass sprint.

Stage 2: Venray (13km ITT)
Time trial in the region Wout Poels originally comes from. Don't be mistaken, even though it's part of the province that is the most hilly of the Netherlands (Limburg), it's actually in the flattest part of Limburg (northern Limburg), so a nice speedy flat ITT. :)

Stage 3: Aalter - Antwerpen (174km)
Another flat stage, first one in Belgium. Again not very inspiring. Mass sprint

Stage 4: Blankenberge - Ardooie (166km)
Flat but near the Belgian coast. Maybe some chance of echelons but it seems too twisty for that.

Stage 5: Sint-Pieters-Leeuw Lanaken (204km)
We don't have profiles yet but assume this one is at least going to be a little selective since it's partly through the Ardennes and Dutch Limburg (Maastricht). Lanaken is the home of a lot of pro cyclists who train in the Ardennes or in southern Limburg (Amstel Gold area). This will probably be a selective group sprint. But no differences between any gc contenders I think

Stage 6: Riemst - Sittard Geleen (182km)
Another possibility of a nice stage ruined by finishing in Sittard, which is too flat to be interesting. Maybe some selection but most probably, you guessed it, a mass sprint

Stage 7: Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure - Geraardsbergen (215km)
The queen stage, with the finish on the Veste of the Muur. The decider. Only decent stage basically.

The field
*provisonally
1 Team Sunweb (Matthews, Theuns)
2 Quick-Step Floors (Terpstra, Stybar)
3 Mitchelton-Scott (Hayman, Ewan)
4 Team Sky (van Baarle, Wisniowski)
5 BORA - hansgrohe (Oss, Bodnar)
6 BMC Racing Team (Van Avermaet, Ventoso)
7 Movistar Team (Bennati, Amador)
8 Astana Pro Team (Grivko, Gatto)
9 Bahrain Merida Pro Cycling Team (Bozic, Navardauskas)
10 AG2R La Mondiale (Naesen, Vandenbergh)
11 Team LottoNL-Jumbo (Boom, Groenewegen)
12 Lotto Soudal (Wellens, Debusschere)
13 UAE-Team Emirates (Ulissi, Swift)
14 Team EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale (Breschel, Vanmarcke)
15 Trek - Segafredo (Stuyven, Pedersen)
16 Groupama - FDJ (Ladagnous, Morabito)
17 Team Katusha - Alpecin (Kittel, Planckaert)
18 Team Dimension Data (Slagter, Janse van Rensburg)
19 Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise (Sprengers, Rickaert)
20 Roompot - Nederlandse Loterij (van der Lijke, Reinders)
21 Wanty - Groupe Gobert (Dupont, Van Keirsbulck)
22 WB Aqua Protect Veranclassic (Dehaes, Vantomme)
23Vérandas Willems-Crelan (Devolder, de Bie)

The favorites
Strong TT men and strong classic riders. Maybe even a really allround sprinter. Don't be surprised if Kragh Andersen or Matthews takes the win. They both have an excellent (short) ITT and can pretty much survive any terrain. And pick up bonis in the sprints. The terrain is not hard enough for a GVA, Stybar, Naesen, Vanmarcke type to make up for losses in mass sprints and the short ITT.

So the route is meh this year? Shame. It was one of the most interesting races out there in the years when the route was selective.

Yeah, only if there's some wind maybe it can have some nice stages. But I don't expect much this year.

I don't understand why organizers would want to make their race intentionally boring. There's so much potential in the Benelux...

*** this race, hope it gets canned.

Why does Tim Wellens even waste his time here?

“My goal is to claim the overall victory once more, though it will not be easy this time. The stage I usually win, has not been included in the course, so it will be more difficult to make a difference. This year, you don’t have to be a strong climber to win the Tour. My biggest opponent is the type of rider that is a good sprinter and time trialist. The time trial and bonus seconds along the way play an important role in determining the general classification. The first small differences will appear in the time trial on Tuesday and will partly decide the overall standings at the end.”

Looks like a pretty dull route for what is usually a very entertaining race.

Søren Kragh will win this bike race.
Emil Axelgaard actually has him as the favourite - and you simply cannot say he is chauvinistic by any means!

I also hope (and think) that Kragh actually will win. Very much like this kid.

What's the point of having a GC in a race that's totally flat. Everyone know that the TT winner will also be a GC winner unless he gets bored and goes home.

Well, in LeTour you had the top3 in the ITT finishing 1 2 3 in the GC.

The pancake flat edition of 2016 was won by Terpstra who finished 17th in the ITT.

Maxi Schachmann to Top 5 this race. Actually really curious in what he can do at this race after his ITT at the Euros.

Matthews should win this. Good TT, fast enough to score some bonus seconds and he´ll never be in trouble on this roads.

Tim Wellens replied

Still pretty cocky choice of words from Wellens. :p
Especially since he only won it twice in his career.

He won it three times actually.

2014, 2015 and 2017. There was no Ardennes stage in 2016 because sprinters are little cry babies.

Why such a boring route? This race usually has some good stages but this year is just meh.

I had to check which one had the horrible route of having queen stage first, then series of flat stages and ITT as the last one. It was 2007.

Dutch sponsors that don't care for Belgium.

As usual, Dutch organizers ruin most races they get their grubby hands on. How many boring Grand Tour starts have we had because they just had to start in this boring country (when it comes to cycling terrain).

Once the contract with Geraardsbergen runs out you'll see nothing but flat stages and probably a TTT to ruin things even more.

I want a real Tour of the Benelux with 4 stages in Belgium, two stages in Luxembourg and one stage in the Netherlands (a prologue or something).

I'm all for your idea of a nice stage race.

Even you have to admit that the Amstel has been a very good race the last two years.
