Hmm yes an odd thing, but maybe he wants to put down some serious power and see how it goes, and maybe a little competition will help to motivate himself? He should be training on his own though instead of messing around :p.

Maybe. Seems he could have gotten that going to Calpe with the rest of the team, but I'm just a cycling fan, not a professional cyclist so I assume he knows what he is doing.

It looks like AC attacked on the lead in to test his strength. So much for him basically getting in a training ride. ;)

Here's Sammy Sanchez's bike. I consider it a fashion don't:

Now he just needs gold shoes and a gold helmet. Bettini might be able to lend the stuff to him...assuming that Bettini got over the idiocy of wearing gold all the time.

It might be distasteful IYO but I know if I were Olympic champion I'd proudly deck my bike out in similar fashion. I don't know about the shoes though.;)

A fashion don't? Hey ..... having grown up with bikes from the 70's and 80's with sleek lines, every pro bike today appears as a fashion don't to me. :) They look like they're straight out of a cartoon with the the fat molded tubes and high profile rims.

I am pretty sure that Bettini has one of these suits. Sanchez should borrow it.

Actually I think this was Footon's intent but something went wrong (or more wrong) from drawing board to final product.:D

Quite a few top placings by non-sprinters. Interesting.

I noticed the same thing. Stage profils can be deceiving but It looks like the finish went slightly uphill.

I'm very impressed with Contador. Haven't been riding since july 26. Looking forward to see how well he will do.

From Team Radio Shack's write up of the Stage 1:

. Defending champion Alberto Contador (Astana) attacked but Vaugrenard geared up and rolled over the champion to take the victory in the opening stage.

Every other article/summary I've seen of the stage seemed to suggest that Vaugrenard attacked after the peloton sucked AC back in, not that Vaugrenard personally rode him down. They really hate them some AC over at Radio Shack.

I know.... see the winner's own view:

"On the penultimate little hill [about 1.5km from the finish] there was an attack and I could see that Contador had attacked on his own," said Vaugrenard. "He stayed clear for a bit but the group came together again just as we reached the roundabout at the foot of that hill with about a kilometre to go. But as they caught him the bunch's speed slowed a little and I realised that even though I was a little way back I had a chance for an attack of my own.

Somewhere on this big ole message board, there are faux twitter posts by Lance's newest child,

one that I remember:

'when daddy gets drunk, he reeeeally hates that mexican guy'
