I don't know, how many countries will want to work for a mass sprint?

It's either Cav that's going to win or a breakaway.

Mate, it wasn't a normal sprint, hence Gilbert still coming second in it(he's a good sprinter, but there were better sprinters in that group). It was a course tailor made for Gilbert.

Gilbert cannot win the green jersey at the Tour, even if he tried

Two different cyclists like I said. Boonen has a better shot at winning 3 monuments. Gilbert can win them all, but he isn't as strong as Boonen in the 3 monuments(MSR, RVV and PR). So, I think it still balances out :)

i like how you forget about 2 of the 5 monuments. gilbert can win those. can boonen do it? and tbh i can see gilbert wining at least the MSR and the RVV.

p.s. fyi i am somesort of boonen fanboy too but i am realistic

well, how many fast finishers or thrustworthy attackers (like Voeckler and so from the breakaway thread) do the larger countries have?
Italia has Pettacci for the sprint and Pozzato and Visconti in a breakaway, seems good
Spain has Freire for a group without Cavendish, maybe in a breakaway, and maybe LLS in a small group? They are on a lower level on the flat I think.
Belgium Boonen sprint and GvA in a small group?
Australia McEwen, Davis

If 2 or 3 of these 4 countries manage to have a good enough guy in a break and one of them is Italy, it van work I think.

I also really like to see Tom Boonen win Omloop het Volk/Nieuwsblad: he never won it before. And Stijn Devolder to go for Eroica Strade Bianchi and Boom for Brabantse Pijl.

I'm not forgetting any monument. I'm saying Boonen can only win 3 monuments. And he has a better shot at winning those 3 monuments than Gilbert has. Perhaps my sentence was unclear.

Gilbert can win all 5 of them, but Boonen has a better shot than Gilbert at winning the RVV, MSR and PR. That's just realism.

boys (or at least the belgian part of the argument)...

just be proud that a nation like belgium has big guns like Boonen AND Gilbert, I know a lot of nations (france anyone) who can only dream of having riders really capable of winning classics like P-R, L-B-L and de ronde...

the french are great in number, but have no top rider currently. They excel at winning break-away stages in grand tours, which really says enough about the strength in other parts.

No top climber, no top sprinter, no top time trial specialist, no top gc rider, no top classics specialist. Nothing. It reflects in the UCI / CQ rankings as well.
Good, but not world class. Not even Chavanel

Puting newly-discovered Google docs to use again:
here are the predictions so far.

Gilbert is fancied for 9 of the 11 races by at least some people, the exceptions being Paris-Roubaix and the questionably included Paris-Brussels.

The hottest favourite is Gilbert for Amstel Gold, followed by Gilbert again for Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Boonen in Paris Roubaix: the most open races seem to be Paris Tours and Gent-Wevelgem.

Yep. I dont tip Greipel cos as OPs sprinter, i dont see him contesting it, which means its between 2nd tier sprinters, and i like Jacobo.

Your second comment makes me think, are the 2 danilos going to be on the same team? Which team is it that will win the race of falling leaves next year?

I dont know about MSR. This is where Cancellara is simply better. The Poggio is what, 6 7 k out. Canc is able to go on the Poggio and tt from there. I know its not the same, but in Geelong, the last hill was a similar distance out, the sprinters teams were far more tired than in MSR, which favoured Gilbert who is the better climber, and focused his entire season on it. Gilbert went on the hill and tried it but got caught with about 2k to go.

I dont see how he will be able to do it at MSR, with less hills to tire out the others and the likes of Cavs HTC leadout challenging him.

John Gadret shows now and again signs of being a very very good climber. This year again with the top top climbers in the world on the Giro queen stage. Shame hes way too old.

Edit: I thought he was late 30's. Hes younger then Menchov.

I think they should give him a leadership role in the Tour.

Strong headwind in the Worlds though.

Not sure why Paris Tours and Paris Brussels are on the list, but not Omloop and E3 which are both great races. Omloop is the real start of the season. Cracking race. Paris - Tours maybe, but PB isnt even televised in most of the cycling countries.
