Yeah, seriously. Van den Broeck didn't climb better than Voeckler, he just refused to give up and it paid off beautifully, but there's no need to read too much into it. He's obviously in decent shape, but that's all. Mistiming a peak is always a possibility, but I haven't seen anything to make me think he's at his best.

Yes, I understand your frustration, maybe my posts after my intial reply was a bit wide and I erred in that.
Just as long nobody says he will win TdF, beat Cancellara (or Panzer-Martin) or win LBL over Gilbert anytime soon, honestly, he is much closer to beating Cavendish than all that.

Based on what exactly would VDB2 be near his peak already? This is just a showing of his stronger basic form in comparison to last year.
He didn't do anything spectacular today in terms of climbing. After the race, he even said he was à bloc for a while after he counterattacked Sivtsov. He must be in super form He gained like 20s on the flat part and managed to hold on in the last k, end of story.

He had the legs to go twice in succession, which is pretty impressive, but it wasn't as if he was doing it at the end of a multi mountain stage on a seriously tough climb. I suspect that many of the others were taken by surprise by him haring off a second time, then assumed he'd burn out and didn't chase in earnest until too late.
As against that though, the chasing group whittled itself down dramatically so they can't have been going all that slow.
Can anyone explain why exactly he never won a race before now? If you'd only ever watched him today, you'd never imagine that he'd been kicking around for years without a win.

Until I see a source that says otherwise I'm going to give EBH the credit of having the will to become, and being, the type of cyclist that he is, and that SKY gives him the chances he reasonably deserve. That's just me though.

Round up a couple of Martin fans like Bavarian and there would be a perpetual back and forth about the results today for both Gesink and Martin. Furthermore, the general expectations for Gesink are higher than those for Martin. He's generally regarded as the better GC candidate.
Good for you that you are reserving your comments for the Tour, which is where it counts really.
