I'm surprised they've never added a Logan stage. Logan Canyon and Bear Lake would be so beautiful and it's not really very far away.

There's no question that there are other beautiful parts of the state. I'd love a stage through Zion or up to Brian Head. Up to LaSal in Moab would be awesome or up to Canyonlands national park. Breathtaking scenery.

Problem is, Utah population is clustered around the Salt Lake area. There's really nothing major between the SLC metropolitan area and Moab or St. George. Transitions would be too hard.

Maybe it's a bit too early, but I didn't want the other Tour of Utah thread to become the official race thread.

Derp. Well played, mods.

EDIT: Note to self, read the thread first; post sarcastic silliness second.

Noted. Thanks for that.

Tommy D will be there. Maybe he can put salt on the Leech, but I suspect that after totally sucking at the Tdf, Leipheimer will magically improve by leaps and bounds.

My thought (fear) as well. I hope TD smokes him, but I remember the TOC from a few years ago and .....

OK, i get it ... Moab is not in the future for the ToU .... ! We used to have a stage race. Don't kid yourself (or others); moab has some great road riding.
…….
i guess we;ll always be ... the other Utah ..... I love it that way!

I am sure many of us know how great it is around Moab. I agree, and have ridden La Sal Mt Loop Road, Arches, Potash, the River Road, etc and it is a great area for road biking (among other things). That doesn’t mean that it is feasible to include in the race, though.

The same thing is happening in the Colorado stage-race. Many good areas of the state are not being featured. They are far away from the population center like Moab is to SLC.

Your last sentence sounds like you are flip-flopping on the issue, though.

But consider this: there are many advantages of living in a nice area that flies under the radar (even though one could hardly say that about Moab) and does not have even more attention foisted on it by an event such as this. To much attention to an area can erode the very thing you love about an area if given enough time.

True, i seem to flip flop given my resignation about the ToU NOT coming to moab ... and your last paragraph explains some of why. But, I would LOVE to see Moab regain more of its once glory as a cyclist destination / perhaps as a spring training camp. I would surely enjoy seeing Moab's biking destination reputation someday exceed it's jeeping bad-raputaion !!!

Btw; there is a segregated bike path .. no, road ... from the NEW colorado bike bridge all the way up the old Arches road, to hwy 313, going up to Dedd Horse state park.

I saw that path when I was there the first week in May.
Moab is a great place for road and MTB, as you know. I have seen the Jeep/ATV crowd grow exponentially (it seems) since the early 90's there and now they seem like the vast majority. Not sure if that is true, but it sure feels that way. It was a zoo when we were there. The Poison Spider Trail used to be MTB central, but now it was motos everywhere and I only saw 2 other groups of bikers. The black stain of burnt ruber on the rock was everywhere. It's the polar opposite of road biking..... but I digress.

Anyway, yeah there is huge potential for a race there, I know they have a grandfondo now. The Colorado race is coming within a few miles of where I live and they want us to be course marshalls. I'm still wondering what the impact will be with all this additional attention we will get.. will it make things better or possibly worse?

What is the difference in the type of teams mentioned below?

The race has attracted five ProTeams, four Professional Continental squads and seven Continental teams, and brought in riders from across the globe.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

They are the three tiers of UCI registered teams.

"ProTeams" are the World Tour teams, the top 18 teams in the world who are invited to all the biggest races. They race in WT, .HC and .1 category races.

Professional Continental is the next tier, they can race in the biggest races (World Tour) but require an invite from the race organisers. They also race in .HC .1 and .2 races (the lower the category generally the weaker the field).

Continental teams are the lowest tier, they are not allowed to participate in World Tour events, only .HC, .1 and .2.

Utah is a 2.1 (2 means it's a stage race, .1 is the level) so all three types of teams are allowed to race, but it's up to the organiser to select which ones - within the guidelines which dictate how many World Tour teams, from what country/region the Continental teams can come from.

In Utah the teams are the following:

World Tour
TEAM RADIOSHACK (USA)
HTC - HIGHROAD (USA)
BMC RACING TEAM (USA)
TEAM GARMIN - CERVELO (USA)
LIQUIGAS - CANNONDALE (ITA)

Professional Continental
GEOX - TMC (ESP)
TEAM TYPE 1 - SANOFI AVENTIS (USA)
TEAM SPIDERTECH POWERED BY C10 (CAN)
UNITEDHEALTHCARE PRO CYCLING (USA)

Continental
REALCYCLIST.COM CYCLING TEAM (USA)
ENDURA RACING (UK)
BISSELL PRO CYCLING (USA)
JAMIS - SUTTER HOME (USA)
KELLY BENEFIT STRATEGIES - OPTUM HEALTH (USA)
PUREBLACK RACING (NZ)
GOBERNACION DE ANTIOQUIA - INDEPORTES ANTIOQUIA (COL)

The World Tour teams have professionals who have just ridden the Tour or similar races on the World Tour, whereas the Continental teams mainly only ride .2 category races or domestic/national races (which are not classified by the UCI system).

It will be interesting to see if Mancebo can hang with guys coming off the TDF like Hesjedal and Leipheimer.

Haven't you heard he will be replacing Levi as RS's new pension aged leader if he wins this???

I don't know what will be better this or Colarado. Also is Tommy D racing the Vuelta? Maybe just to podium since he has proven he can go well in mountains at the TDF.
