About 35-40k from the finish. Those 5 were working together. The chase behind folded quickly.

So basically 5 riders out time trialed a much larger chase group for 35-40km? Odd.

The winning five were able to stay away partly because much of what they had to ride as a TT was downhill. The advantage of a larger group is mostly erased on a downhill.
