Kern finished his ITT in the Dauphiné last year when he was in great shape, in between JvdB and Gesink... Maybe he had a flat then?

Well he isnt all that good compared to the top riders as the riders he beat there were:

1. KERN Christophe EUC 59'41"
2. RIBLON Christophe ALM 01'15"
3. LEQUATRE Geoffroy RSH 01'15"
4. ROUX Anthony FDJ 01'31"
5. BODROGI Laszlo TT1 01'49"
6. CHAVANEL Sylvain QST 01'50"
7. GAUDIN Damien EUC 01'56"
8. COPPEL Jérôme SAU 02'15"
9. PERAUD Jean-Christophe ALM 02'28"
10. CHAMPION Dimitri ALM 02'30"

Not the greatest competition but he also wasnt going for it all that much probably saving himself for his exertions on stage 5, but he should have done better admittedly....
Maybe he rode in the rain?

Interesting how Astana went with entirely Slavic roster for this race.

Also notable that Vino and Kash are both in the race in one team.

Good for him, like I just posted in the Gesink thread, true champs go for the win when they can and even if he collapses in the TDF (wouldn't be because of his attitude in the Dauphiné anyway) he'd still have a rare (never been done ?) PN/TDR/CD tryptic to his name.

I don't think it will be that hard for him to win imo. Do a decent TT and drop MArtin in one of moutnain stages is enough for him to win this and that isn't that hard with the team he has ;)

Schleck, Schleck, Cunego, Danielson,

That's 4 of the top 10 last year not to mention radioshack's best hopes who crashed out. Kloden and Leipheimer,

I know the majority always do dauphine, but this year is particularly thin on the ground.

that was 2011. the other years was just as horrible as now.

Prove it, go back as far as you want, and present me with a year where less than 4 of the tour top 10 have done the tour de suisse as prep.

This year looks like it will be maybe 1.

The only rare thing in (modern) cycling is winning Paris-Roubaix and the Tour de France in one career.

Who even has a shot nowadays? Evans and Cancellara are the best hopes nowdays. Really doesn't seem very likely does it. Given Evans has never ridden cobbled classics, and Cancellara would have to lose 10 kg or something.

Don´t forget Wiggins used to ride PR as a ´preparation´, maybe if he´d really focus on cobbles instead of PN and Romandie he can do it. He certainly has the required power, so he could do it like Vansummeren did it. Another rider who could try is Hesjedal, he also seems quite heavy like Wiggins.(He still won't win the Tour though)

regarding results in cobbled classics and grand tours it's has been Devolder who did show the best mixture so far - but of course, it's unlikely that he'll ever win one of them, not to mention both...

Yeah, Wiggo came 25th in Paris Roubiax in 2009 with Garmin as a domestique so he definitely has a chance of nice result there. Winnig... well he would need incredible amount of luck.

Since Armstrong's double in 2002-03 Dauphiné has awful history in Tour btw.

2004 Mayo - crashed early, struggled for a long time before DNF
2005 Landaluze - surprising and controversial winner, 100th
2006 Leipheimer - horrible 1st TT, not flashy after that either, one late-race breakaway and 12th
2007 Moreau - well in the race but was caught napping in one stage where Astana blew up the peloton
2008 Valverde - won first stage but suffered a lot in Hautacam stage, finished 9th
2009 Valverde - CONI ban, not in the race
2010 Brajkovic - mainly a domestique for big guys, finished 43rd
2011 Wiggins - crashed, DNF

Yes but thats not truly representative, because if you consider the runners up and those who did well at the Dauphine (aside from winning it) they were indeed at the sharp end for the tour as well.

2011 Cadel 2nd (won tour) Voeckler 10th (4th at tour)
2010 Contador 2nd (won tour, sort of)
2009 Cadel 2nd, Contador 3rd (won tour)
2008 Cadel 2nd (2nd at tour), Leipheimer 3rd.

Perhaps this indicates that tour contenders who are clearly in good form are quite happy not to bury themselves for the Dauphine and/or don't want to show their hand.

Technically Sagan has more of a chance than those two....
