You're right, it's MUCH more likely that Eisel and Cav were attacking w/ 20k+ to try to win the stage.

Strange that it was De Gendt covering it as Feillu pulled out the other day. Maybe you're right. Any other sprinters he may have been protecting?

To show confidence in their sprinter.

Also you never know when your team might (or maybe did in the past) need assistance in a chase.

Well, their sprinter should know that you have confidence in him anyway so that's not really a valid argument in my opinion.
For instance, Greenedge using up one of their men early in the stage instead of letting Sky use up one man is a difference of two men in the final.

He could be going for the Intermediate sprint competition or just wanted to pick up some cash.

Well, you aren't going to win if you don't try even though Cav is super favorite.. And Sky might say 'ok, we got our victories, we are happy to help but we are not doing it alone'. I remember Brian Holm said this a couple of times with HTC.

Ifs, buts and maybes but if Cav wins today and takes the points jersey then Sky might not work much on the stage in 2 days time which is very similar. Onus would then be on GreenEdge to take up the chase. Then again if Cav wins here then Sky would have extra encouragement to chase as they would fancy their chances even more of the effort paying off.

Have to see what happens here first though. Im guessing that Cav is being dropped as i write this making it all pointless:eek:

I'm not saying that they shouldn't try winning of course. I'm saying that they should just let Sky do the hard work early on. Cavendish is so good that the other teams can take the liberty to say that they won't work. And of course Sky will chase. I'd at least take the gamble.
