I was pretty impressed by his sprint though :p

I was pretty sure it'd be between Urán and one of Hesjedal or Purito, and I gave Basso a good chance of beating Pozzovivo, but I suppose some guys were too tired.

uran, hesjedal and scarponi were clearly cramped. purito is the fastest then and basso was very strong. he surprised me too. guess his sprint win from duarte was similar :p

He said without cramping he could have caught and probably dropped all of them.
I don't remember him mentioning Basso though.

nah michele was great in the studio, always ready for a good laugh

"Poi nella seconda parte sono riuscito a rientrare bene anche perchè davanti scendeva Ivan che si sa che non è un drago in discesa... "

De Gendt has a very good chance to make it into top 10:D

Well... he is riding for GC. Hopes to finish top 20 or better. If he can keep this up, i'm curious for his ITT. Who in the top 15 is faster?

OPQS ( chicchi ), Androni with Rujano gone ( Ferrari ) should help tomorrow a bit too.

Saxo (Haedo) too probably, maybe Farnese also (Guardini) as those teams don't really have any other things to look after (besides Rabottini defending the mountain jersey). The only critical moment for Sky is the start of the stage actually. It's just the case of letting a small enough group go, preferably with no riders from other teams with sprinters left in the race. Once that is settled it's just a case of Stannard controlling the break for the next 100k.

i'm cheering too for purito between the 4 guys left for overall win.
basso will at least try to go hard on pampeago, but purito will love that climb.and pozzovivo too,he did well in 2008.
ryder,i said from the beginning don't underestimate him.but pampeago 10% should be hard for him and the mortirolo.stelvio not so much.if they will go slow again,he will stay with them and smoke the itt

Haedo the elder has already left, so Saxo will be going for the breakaway, like every other team in the peleton. :O)

Nice stage, the masks have fallen, Kreuziger shows (again) he'll probably never win a GT. Too bad Pozzo didn't gun it at 2k from the top, would have been interesting. Barring any accidents it looks like this one for the Canadian dude.

I'm aware of that. Even if he drops out of the top 10, he's bound to round a couple of guys up with the ITT, hence my question. I think he might be the best ITT'er in the top 15. But... he has to survive the mountains first. But he rode very good and clever today, one of the first to drop, but riding his own pace and look where it got him.

He also isn't one to crack due to GT length. Last year his 3rd week in TDF was great (alpe d'huez 6th, ITT 4th).

Katusha and Rodriguez will scarcely be complaining tonight, but it seems odd that Moreno is able to finish 8th on the stage, and yet was not available to support Purito even 60km out, when there were 40+ riders in the Maglia Rosa group.

Maybe but if there is one rider you can not fault for his domestique duties it is Moreno, he contstantly wins races and shows he has the ability to climb at the top level and win GT stages and yet he still is willing to stick around and race for Purito.

Yep he recovered pretty well, like Gadret, the pace set at the foot by Basso just killed the field, even though it wasn't very impressive on TV.

He was out of touch with his leader 40km before Basso started driving the pace. He recovered well like a rider trying to preserve his top 15 place in GC, but didn't bury himself early like the main mountain helper for a pink jersey contender.

So are we down to four serious contenders now?

JRod
Hesjedal
Basso
Scarponi

I agree. These are the last four left with any legitimate shot at winning this thing. I'd tend to think that after today, Scarponi's chances are done unless he really recovers well going into the weekend. I'm still hoping JRod cracks big time on one of the last two summit finishes. Basso does look strongest, but he'll need others to blow as he doesn't seem able to attack in the slightest. I'm really impressed with Hesjedal but I still have the feeling he'll lose time on the Stelvio, if not on Friday. We'll see what happens though, we should be in for an exciting final 3 days of racing. It very well could come down to the final TT...

On a side note, I too was disappointed with the lack of attacking on the Giau today. I thought Hesjedal looked pretty strong and he shouldn't have given up his attack so quickly. Also, Pozzovivo should have attacked a lot sooner...

TT before mountains makes riders attack and fight for their place. More TT's kms would definitely sparkle the race more imo.

what could be a good race then? great attacks by??? who's going to make this huge attacks? I just don't get it sometimes. I bet that if someone attacked and made a huge gap then a clinic post is immediatelly opened.

What is the right answer here, I just don't know.

His point is that racing was wilder and more attack filled in the 1980s and 1970s, before the EPO era than it was at the height of the EPO era. Highly effective doping methods were not the cause of attacking riding, as in fact riding became less attacking in that period.

What's causing less attacking riding is greater professionalism, organisation and tactical caution, not the doping status of the peloton.

Oh come on now, then GreenEdge would have been thrown out the race (have you seen they're 7 hours down on the team classification?) en masse!

I do agree that one of the worthless flat stages should have been replaced by an ITT though.

Ah ok, I was only able to catch up with the broadcast when they were at the foot of the last climb and was surprised to see Kreuziger 1k behind, need to read up on the events that preceded!
