Sorry guys but you can't seriously defend this weak field.
This is one of the weakest fields ever in the Giro.

I'd rather watch small names race each other than big names ride in formation waiting for the ITT.

That's my defence of the weak field.

Even in its 2011 iteration, I'd rather watch the Volta a Portugal than the Tour Down Under.

I'm beginning to believe in Hesjedal as a GC contender.

I suppose the prologue is pretty good evidence that at the very least he's going to end up with an advantage over the other contenders in the other ITT and the TTT. The slowest man on the Garmin team came in well ahead of many of the GC men. Hesjedal is by no means a TT specialist, but in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

It's also evidence that he's in shape, and we know that he tends to be better in the last week than most. So really, the issue that remains is whether or not he can climb with the big guns. He has done so in a couple of big races, but generally he falls short.

Sorry but this Giro field is a joke.
What pathetic performances by almost all GC contenders.
They are so lucky that there are no real TTs in Giro anymore.
It's a disgrace that frauds like this can win a GT. Lacking any abilty to ride in the flat. The masters of the old days role in their graves.

it's normal. the giro is for climbers. its an absolutely different genre compared to the tour and thats brilliant. races must be different.

has scarponi said anything regarding today's perfomance?

Are the people ruling out Scarponi for GC, based on his prologue result, having us on? Is this a joke I don't get?

You can't write anyone off based only on a prologue. However, getting smashed in a prologue by the likes of Purito isn't exactly an encouraging indication of strong form. It's not as if Scarponi is a Gadret type from whom a dreadful flat ITT would be expected.

Scarponi is as done as it gets.
He's not that bad in Flat TT usually.
If he performs as horrible as this, he either not motivated or in shape. Theirs no way in hell he can win thies Giro. He should rather consider to drop out and prepare for the Tour.

Lol. One can actually ride oneself into decent shape during GTs. Scarponi will end solidly at around 6th or 7th.

What planet are you on? He doesn't need to be good until Cervinia which is what, two weeks away?

Ruling anyone out of a GT based on a prologue result is completely barmy and something that would only be heard in the Cyclingnews forum.

He looks like he hasn't even seen a TT bike since last July.

I wonder if he would have been better on his road bike on a course like today's or would he really lose that much extra time ?

6th or 7th isn't exactly a sucess if you are the title defender ;)
