This is should answer your question:
David Millar @millarmind
Only he would give everything for the team to the point of getting dropped when he knew he was in line for the leader's jersey.
He's clearly talking about Navardauskas, who was almost dropped in the final kilometer.

no, not that much, at least van Winden didn't, but they lost some time, yes

Doh, you are right, been a long day - i think i got the stage standings from stage 3 mixed up with the GC standings. Bos lost about 8 minutes and van Winden 5.20.

GC after stage 3
190 Bos 3.44
197 van Winden 8.52

GC after stage 4
196 Bos 11.35
198 van Winden 14.14

also, Purito looked good today again. I hope he doesn't hit his peak too early though and that he can maintain form over 3 weeks without cracking big time on one of the hard mountain stages. Although I fear he will.

Last year he improved as the Giro went on.... but he wasnt in as good form at the begining... I guess we will see.

The key point is that he will need to be in top form at the end a) because of the decisive MTFs b)More importantly for him because he will need to put in as good a TT as remotely possible.
If he isnt then there goes bye bye to his podium chances.

Could be a tough stage for injured people on Friday (stage 6). If someone decides to make it a hard day, or it is taking a long time for a break to get established, then it would be easy to get dropped on those early hills and have to cycle a long way by yourself.

well yeah that's my point. He's looking really good already, a bit too early maybe, who knows. We will find out more this weekend.

Did alex get to stand on the podium as a winner or if you get dropped do you get screwed in that regard?

One always hopes Purito can get it together for a gt sometime, but it would not be surprising to see him fail on some stage.

Well done Garmin. Shame about Phinney as with an on form Phinney, a team without a crash and a team not having to wait for Phinner who was getting dropped, I think they could have won.

Not with the lineup they have at the Giro... Garmin's is way better for TTTs

Yes - nine of them on the podium. In TTTs with 9 riders the qualifying time is usually that of the fifth rider but it's the team that posts the result.

Didn't refresh and wasn't aware of pic above.

Its a team event, just because you got dropped, doesnt mean you didnt contribute!

I still can't get over the fact that there is a rider named Jack Bauer.

I think he should try to go for one hour record...

According to the official results; Stannard was dropped, not Henao.
+1.

From the Sky web site:

http://www.teamsky.com/article/0,27290,25248_7742482,00.html

Uran had a difference of 17 seconds on Henao on the third stage and finished with the same difference after the TTT. On the other hand Stannard had an advantage of 3 seconds on Uran after stage 3 on GC. After the TTT he figures with a 13 seconds deficit on Uran. That means that he finished the stage just 16 seconds after the main six men from Sky finished the stage.

Same with overall races though and teams aren't usually given podium moments with the leaders they sacrifice themselves for. they do it sometimes after but not during the thing
