Gerrans is clearly one of the contenders. Sure, not one of the absolute favorites, but he is tactically very savvy and that's why you can't count him out.

Gilbert has won 2 stages in the Vuelta, impressivly yes, but the competition hasn't been super strong, and those are his only wins this year. This doesn't necessarily mean we will see Gilbert in 2011 shape at the Worlds. He should be one of the favorites sure, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions too fast. Purito on Cauberg and then still 1k to go? Nah. Valverde will be more dangerous I think.

I didn't watch the race, so can anyone explain to me the talking about sagan being in good shape, when he isnt even in the top ten?

When GVA attacked on the climb and Gerrans went with him Sagan made a attempt to bridge up to them which he almost managed to do. He was caught in the final few hundred meters by a sprinting peloton and fell back.

Valverde, Purito, and Moreno on stage 19 isn't strong competition?

Gerrans races as smart as anyone. His palmares this year shows you don't always have to be the strongest, hell he's shown us you don't ever need to be the strongest!

He could win the Worlds.

Strong yes, but not super strong al á TdF. Valverde I agree with, Purito and Moreno need a lite more steepness. And what did Gilbert do in TdF, the GC race that counts the most? He was blown away on Gilbert type of finishes. My point is just that his wins should be put in perspective. But, Gilbert is still imo one of the favorites at the Worlds, just think we shouldn't hype him too much after his Vuelta wins.

What did Valverde do during the Tour on his finishes?

Tour had a weak field and a weak parcour.

Ok, so the guys that rock in the Vuelta aren't close on the same type of finishes in the Tour and you conclude that it was the Tour that had the weak field? Your comprehension of logic is incredible sometimes.

They were obviously not in the same shape during the Tour as they were in the Vuelta. You know, riding out a whole GT tends to improve your form... It's obvious to anyone this Valverde and Phil are much better than they were in the Tour.

Tell me, who would've beaten Phil on these stages besides Sagan of the Tour?

Let me guess, Jurgen van den Broeck?

Who are the best cyclists on uphill finishes?

Philippe Gilbert, Joaquim Rodriguez, Alejandro Valverde, Alberto Contador and Peter Sagan. The rest are all a level below. Only Sagan is missing. Valverde needed a GT in his legs after his ban. Phil needed a GT in his legs after what appears to have been a pretty bad winter preparation.

Contador is clearly a level below the others, as shown today.
Dani Moreno is better than him. Mollema too. And there are probably others.

Yeah, but he just came back from a ban though. I don't believe he's at his best yet. Although this is indeed not his thing, not steep enough. I just included him for the more steeper walls, like Mende for example. There's no way Mollema will beat a good Contador at Mende or Mur de Huy.
