I thought the UCI ProTour rankings started in 2005, and even before that, the UCI World Ranking had existed since the 1980's, I thought.

The ProTour was introduced in 2005 but the rankings didn't determine which teams got licenses the following year as is now the case. It was essentially a closed shop, you'd get (for example) a two year PT license and you could have a horrendous season but still retain your license for the following year. It was a bit of a farce and although the current system is far from ideal, it's an improvement from the original PT system, for sure.

Anyone disagreeing in this analysis? Personally, I don't see Scarponi doing anything 2 days in a row. I also don't see either Nibali or Evans winning the stage.

Not a Wiggins fan and would love to see this race open up but for me Wiggins is the value for the stage at 16/1

He will unless isolated do less work than those around him, the final climb is not that severe and as far as will to win it goes he looks the type of guy who would love to make a statement.

Someone should do a walkaround of the Team Buses (bit late now though!!) to see who is on the rollers - the climb starts after 14.5km, so anyone with intent might be warming up before the start.

One problem for Evans, Nibali, Menchov, VdB are that they have too few good domestiques in the mountains, which allows Sky to control the pace. Yesterday we saw EBH setting a relatively slow pace on Colombier and no other team reacted even if they probably realized the pace was too slow to tire out Wiggo/Froome. When Sky can control the tempo without being challanged, they can set it relatively low and save energy to the end of the stages when the pace naturally goes up.

I think it'll be won by Pinot or someone like that - from the Sky group on the final climb, but not someone they'll care about attacking near the end.

Yeah thanks for explaining the obvious. It's just very very rare, or actually I think it never happened that somebody warms up for a road stage on the rollers

for ITT ok, normal...but a road stage?

Anyway I expect him to try and fail to be in the definite breakaway :p

Didn't he say that it takes longer for him to get warm with the titan in his leg? With climbs starting early today a little warming up might be needed.
