2012 Tour of Qatar (5th - 10th February), 2.HC

Have got home too late to bother with highlights, but presume 2nd group didn't totally give up, even if they drifted out from the 20 second gap.

Seem to come in 40 odd seconds down, which given it went ballistic at the front is pretty respectable by the sounds of it.

Well fought out. Blythe impressive on that huge attack by Fabs. He must have been on limit though because he didn't help or was beginning to flat. Too bad for him, they might have stayed away.

Missing the crowds though.

He had a puncture with 3.2km according to the BMC website. Tough luck for Adam when he was in a possible winning or most likely podium position for the stage which could have set him up for gc.

One thing I noticed was that at one point Blythe had a minor gap ahead of him, and Hushovd (or was it Phinney?) dropped back, caught his hand and "threw" him forward back into the lead group. That's some pretty good team work right there.

Is that any more legal than the same crap which got someone penalised in the TTT last year?

That was a seriously awesome stage. Boonen was clearly the strongest. Cancellara was close but couldnt quite get away.

It seems like it is a Boonen and Steegmans comeback year. Steegmans was protecting Boonen and riding in the wind and still finished 5th.

If only Gilbert had made the group it would have been exactly like the classics.

Yes. If it wins you a sprint it's (apparently) against the rules, but if you're allowed to push a teammate, why not sling him. Happens quite often, actually.

You are not allowed to take your hands of your wheel in a sprint (Freire did that and got penalized), during a stage its ok ;)

Wasn't that in the sprint? Completely different situation.

yes, that was inside the final km I think. I don't know what exactly is stated in the rules but if that happened the way you mentioned Blythe might have lost contact without being slinged back to the front (and therefor might have lost any chance to win the race), so I don't think it's a completely different szenario.

But you might be right, it happens quite often and I've never heard of anyone being penalized for doing it the way it happened today, so it might be okay. Doesn't really matter anway, being ripped of a possible victory and 2nd place in GC for having a puncture 100 metres to early is enough of a personal punishment.

Personally I don't think last spring went that badly for them, podium in a few WT stage races, winning Omloop, podium in Roubaix, top 5 in Flanders... what more can you reasonably expect from a team without superstars? Putting everything on those big races entails a risk.

They're maybe too obsessed with the Dutch press who think they ought to win Monuments with second rate riders.

agreed.
still, one would hope when the more difficult stages races start they might be amongst it.

Yes. When Cancellara went he was in Boonens wheel, but when they almost closed to gap to Cancellara he cracked.

Pretty sure Cooke punctured (as did Kruopis).

Taken from the Greenedge website -

Cancellara jumped from the bunch, and at first only Adam Blythe (BMC) was able to hold onto the Swiss man’s wheel. Eventually others bridged across including Boonen, his teammates Gert Steegmans and Nikolas Maes, Sky’s Juan Antonio Flecha, and Veelers. As Cooke made a valiant attempt to bridge across to the attack group, he punctured. Kruopis never had a chance to make the move. His puncture sidelined him four kilometres from the finish as the winning group went up the road. Despite the mechanical, Kruopis managed to crack the top ten overall. He currently sits in ninth, 1:10 down on Boonen.

Good team work from Quickstep. When the Canc attacked Boonen was carted back on. It might have taken a bit of sting out of his sprint if he had to get back on by himself.

Anybody recognize these wee beasties. I wonder if there the culprit causing the flats. They are common here. Nasty thorn. They can even defeat a heavy tire like a Conti Kevlar UltraGatorskin with a liner underneath.

Goat Head Thorns:mad:

Call them "doublegees" in Aus. Popped my puncture virginity on one of them when I first started riding (it was after 6 months so had a good run, they always say you remember your first :D).

Boonen was the strongest in the sense he had teammates and pulled for a long time but Cancellaras' attack was epic ( and took him a while to come back ).
That's what made it all the more impressive for Veelers and Blythe. Hard luck for Blythe/ Kroupis as well.

I would love to be in Qatar at this moment if only just to see the stage finishes ( with only 300 or so people watching at the finish impeding me )
