Anton never really was the punchy climber. Well atleast as far as I remember.
Specially remember him winning the stage in Andorra. Where Mosquera, Purito and Nibali dropped Anton, but with 1km to go Anton had passed them all again and won the stage.

That was on a day when he wasn't feeling well. Heck, I wouldn't count out the same scenario today, would the climb have been longer.

Look at the Jaen victory in the same Vuelta, look at the victory in Castilla y Leon that year, look at the 2006 win, in which he won by nothing else but little explosions between sliding backwards. Look at Fleche 2010.

Yeah, he gave the stages to Tiralongo and Kiryienka for sure, that's true. But that was also obvious and different.

You remind me why I didn't warm to him. He tries to be too nice and likable, too much caring about public opinion, which means he's a bit bland and, for lack of a better word, pathetic (which is a way too strong expression for this).

That is indeed way too strong so why use it?

True. I can see why you dislike that.
Fair enough :)

2010 tells you otherwise. Even 2008 does.

He had perfect prep, except for collar bone in Romandie if I'm not mistaken, but that shouldn't be an excuse.

Still, he looked to be the fifth strongest guy in the race, he can still improve and I don't expect Valverde and Froome to be consistently strong in the mountains.

Who are we talking about here, Gesink ?

Isn't Verbier his most acclaimed thing?

True, ill give you that one.

I still dont think you can compare the first "small" climb on the 3rd stage with that. Im feeling optimistic that he will have what it takes once they get a bit further into the race, and people start getting tired. No matter what, i feel like we are in for a very interesting race judging by how it exploded first time it went uphill.

For those wondering about Machado, he's only one of 49 riders who seem to be missing from the stage results. He just happens to be the most recognizable name, apparently.

Bib numbers 3, 8, 24, 26, 28, 51, 55, 65, 81, 83, 84, 86, 88, 95, 97, 104, 109, 113, 115, 119, 122, 124, 126, 133, 138, 151, 152, 153, 154, 156, 157, 159, 163, 169, 173, 177, 178, 179, 182, 184, 187, 195, 197, 199, 208, 212, 214, 215, 217

was it a good finale?i'd say yes, mainly because alberto is back and he pleases the fans.definitely not the most insane finale of the year though, far from that.
but it was great.

about alberto,he seems a little bit far from his best, those sudden accelerations a la peyresourde 2007 are insanely good to watch but just like then,he can't keep the watts going and going.on arrate in 2009,he had the resources to go for longer and stronger.his time for the climb wasn't beaten

i gotta verify it to be sure, but they climbed arrate in around 14:05 or something.still 40 seconds faster than those weak guys bugno-big mig-ugrumov in '91 :p but no faster than papy horner in 2010 for example.they stopped a lot though

i think alberto must be stronger than this if he wants to win this vuelta.definitely he will try a lot.froomy remains my favourite though.it's like he's remote-controlled,whenever you think he's cracked,he claws back in.

as for good surprises today
valverde:thought he has nothing for this vuelta edition and in fact he seemed extremely strong, hell he even attacked.yes him, valverde.big surprise.chapeau!
intxausti:i always thought maybe that he is in fact quintana
anacona:not really a surprise,i expected him to be there :p

bad surprises:
quintana, wtf happened?he didn't work at the front today by the way
kash...if he won't change anything this vuelta,he should retire...:(

let's see what awaits us for tomorrow...

Wow. Well, that's certainly what it says. Uh.

And here I was thinking the motorbikes that are always pacing the leaders were doing a terrible job.

I was wondering why the group suddenly got smaller.

Van der Broeck, de Gendt GC ambitions over. Froome was very good but I don't see him improving his current level, Contador seems short of form but at stage 3 with everybody not weary and only 3 riders stay with him it's not a bad omen.

For me the key is if Alberto regains his form in time, depending of that it will be Froome or Contador.

Love the way Alberto just made one 5k climb more exciting and fun to watch than the whole of the Tour de france 2012.

Have to admit my heartbeat was Raised, higher then it went in the entire Tour! Great action :)

Sky Train...yeah bye....not going to work here. Better come up with a better idea for tomorrow :)

This could turn into an Awesome race with Valverde, Purito, Alberto and Froome all having their say!!! Want to see Anton do his thing also :)

Bring it on!!!!
