I hope Sky respects the Maglia Rosa and lets Puccio try and defend it. Would be a shame if he were forced to ride on the front. Who knows, he might even end up in the top 3 if they give him the chance, he's not too shabby in a small group sprint and he's clearly in good form.

Bit early for nibs to be putting in time against his rivals don't you think? could you imagine having to defend the pink this early on he's only 14 seconds down.

nope, a break can stay away on tuesday so it might not be a problem. Plus he won't be in pink for sure after Saturday.

Tell that to purito. According to him he gave the jersey to hesjedal on purpose by letting him go on a MTF last year.

Well, maybe Purito should have thought about that.

And maybe he should have offloaded the jersey before then to a breakaway to take back on a stage like Cervinia. Hindsight's a wonderful thing. But Purito lost that race, according to him because he didn't take all the opportunities presented to him to take time. Scarponi has also alluded to having taken Hesjedal a bit lightly and not attacked him when he was having bad days so I guess that might come into it as well, if Purito also felt Hesjedal would fade and was more concerned about the time he put into or lost to, eg, Basso and Scarponi.

Since Sky is in need to let go of the maglia Rosa- I can foresee a breakaway making it to the end. Androni, Colombia, Vini, Bardiani, EE, will send their stage hunters, which cause no big worries to the main GC contender teams at all.

the race might get a bit of spice going downhill when Nibbs could be "testing" the skills- but nothing serious...

Exactly. Any other tactic by sky would be madness. Take the time bonus out of the equation and none of the gc guys will bother trying anything. If the break is caught though, there'll be plenty of wannabes with good descending skills that will be attacking the whole way down the hill.

For the sake of the race i hope sky are interested in keeping the pink jersey, but in reality they are far too ruthless to do it. They've had plenty of success and exposure this season without needing to lead the peloton for a week longer than necessary.

Luca Scinto explained - as wrote in one of my tweets: Small team, strong riders (in a mix) of experience and youth and motivation. Result: good placement"."But we aren't satisfied. Now it will arrive the best part for us, with perfect stages for our riders, we want a success". Meanwhile the first possibility is already tomorrow, 222 km from Sorrento to Marina di Ascena, a perfect stage for #yellowfluo attacks.

Be afraid, be very afraid!

scino is crazy, i've read or heard somewhere that he wants at least 4 stage wins in this giro with such a good team. they will definitely honour the race

Yeah I think sky will set a tempo for a while but don't ee them doing any work in the second half if the men up the road are not an overall threat to them.

Would be a real shame to leave this stage to sprinters.
I hope there will be someone in the mood to try his luck on the climb and descent... Only a kilometer of flat to the finish line.

Then Purito is a moron. Letting go someone who finished one spot ahead of you in the Tour, on purpose.

Giving purito some credit, he's never been in that position before. I guess he followed the regular thought 'no jersey no work'.

It was in a belgian cycling magazine from this year (spring edition). Don't have a source for it.

I guess it depends in how much faith you have in my reading ability and truthfullness.

Looks like an opportunity for Nibali to gain some time on Wiggins, but like many others, I'm unsure he's willing to try this early in the race. I'm crossing my fingers that I'm wrong though, and that someone like Samu also joins.

Sprint from a reduced peloton is my guess for type of finish. The climbs should be too much for pure sprinters like Cav, but I think there will still be a few quick guys around.

Gatto and Ventoso are my two main favourites.

Somehow strange, Weylandt died two years ago, and now such a stage profile.

Fingers crossed it´s dry and everything goes without serious crashes and injuries...

It's never too early. He's going to get blown away in the stage 8 chrono, and would lose the jersey anyway. He needs all the time he can get elsewhere. Besides, they'd only have to actively defend on stage 4 and 7. The sprinter's teams are probably going to be working hard on stages 5 and 6 to go for a win.

No matter how painful and depressing as WW's death was, it still was a very rare incident. It didn't even happen in a dangerous corner. It was a just an incident of pure chance... eyewitness reports were that he was not looking ahead just for a second, hit a little wall on the left side of the road with his pedal causing him to catapult face first into the wall on the other side of the road...
incredible bad luck, but not caused by it being a downhill in the final..

if you want to avoid deaths forever, put all cyclists on a tackx and ride inside

Recall a stage in TdS (from memory, could be wrong) where Cannondale placed 3 boys in front after a descent.

Somehow this man will play a role in Nibali's attack on stage 3.

Break action could be solid as well.

Looking forward to this.
