Is this the coldest March in recorded history in Europe? It feels like mid-winter in bloody Siberia...

Here we only had 1 day of snow this whole winter.

"I think my decision says enough. This is partly a precaution, but also a statement to the organization. They knew long enough that there was so much snow on the road. What happens now is the fault of the organization's own fault. Have you ever wanted to bicycle through the snow ridden? There are nicer things than this. I'm completely frozen."

That's one angry Boonen...

pfft loser. You knew long enough that it would be so cold. What happens now is your fault. You should have stayed at home if you didn't want to go out in the obvious cold.

lol, that wasn't prehistory
thermometers (to a certain extent) were known since classical age. The first reliable ones, though, are dated 17th century.

What hrotha said.

We're talking about the average temperature over a month. I don't think we have access to that data for 1783. Modern weather instrumentation wasn't widely used to keep record of temperatures until the early 1900s. Virtually all temperature records etc. you find will be from those times or more recent.

There's a difference between knowing the temperature at any given time, and keeping a reliable track of average temperatures over a period of time.

I think Adolphe Quetelet was one of the first in the latter one. If not the first.

can anyone estimate when they will arrive at cipressa? I'm not watching at the moment.

At least another hour imo. There's still 82.7km left.

There are plenty of posters on here who would have gone ape **** over those comments had they come from Andy Schleck.

I think the race is more about the continuity, being a 1-day racing classic instead of a weird stop-and-start 2-stage classic. That's what's more disappointing for me, 252km is just fine.

Yes, I agree. Couldn't express myself. This "weird stop-and-start 2-stage classic" thing is what bothers and annoys me most. In these conditions 252 km could be fine but not like this 2 stage way.

2006 March was colder, but other than that one, this one is the coldest in recent history, IRC.

You can't possibly compare Boonen to Andy...

For starters, Boonen actually finished Oman, Paris-Nice and Omloop het Nieuwsblad(bad weather as well). He had 2 serious infections during the winter, give him a break. He has never cared much for Milan-San Remo anyway. There are more important goals for him...
