The thing is Cancellara didn't understand anything all these years...he made Sagan work, and then he got 3rd anyway because he waited and waited.

Yes he should've worked and finish 4th instead right? He did wht he had to do, but the right moment to attack didn't come. Or he didn't take it. You can blame him for that. Not for letting Sagan do the work, because that eas the right thing for him to do.

In 2011 they should've made Goss work more.
In 2012 Cancellara should've made Gerrans work more.
In 2013 Sagan et al should've made Ciolek win more.

Moser was the problem in these tactics. Sagan worked too much without having to do it anyway.

The 22-year old, in his first San Remo, that took huge pulls on the Poggio was the problem. Maybe it was just Sagan's big mouth

Cancellara didn't work at all, he wasn't going to drag Sagan to victory, he said that before. And what was Sagan going to do? Let Stannard coast to victory? Everyone did what they had to, Ciolek was just the one that got the best in the end. It easily could have gone to Sagan or Cancellara, it was so close it's hard to fault anyone.

I think Cancellara should have attacked around 1.5-1 km to go like he did in 2008 and in E3 2011, I guess he just didnt have that power

I am not sure Cancellara has the leg to do a solo attack , IMO he was in best possible situation to do one of his solo ride. He just couldn't do that.

Not as surprising as it might seem. I remember a few years ago Cancellara almost won MSR in a sprint as well. He's pretty fast and after a monument he usually has a bit more left than others, allowing for a nasty sprint. It's just not good enough to lead him to a win it would seem.

Never thought it would be Ciolek in a group of 6 who would beat Sagan. Crazy he was good enough to hold onto that group, as strong as the others.

From what I saw, Ciolek was not calculated as a threat in the group and didn't spend much time driving it. At this distance that means quite a bit.

I wanted Chavanel too, but the beauty of this long event is the "early" or long-running aggressors pay dearly in the last KM. That's why bike racing is so great.

The rivalry between Cancellara and Sagan is about to really start now.

Yeah. the fact that they were 2nd and 3rd also adds to it. They are both annoyed now, not sure at what or who though. They simply forgot about the entire riders.

Do you think Ciolek would've done if Sagan had flicked the elbow? He didn't even ask anyone else to ride. Sagan led the whole descent across to the leaders, and then covered every move in the final. Perhaps slightly overconfident.

I would have loved to see Cancellara attack with around 1.5k to go too. However like you said I don't think he felt strong enough, no point in attacking if you know for sure it will simply allow Sagan to jump on your wheel and coast to the win. All in all a great race though, and respect to Sagan for doing the work.

And for all the Sagan fans, the kid is 23 he's going to win plenty of monuments .

He raced passively the last kms like a sprinter, yet he isn't. He even caught Sagan when he went and then nothing.

Yeah great tactics, it almost looked like his only target was to not let Sagan win. This way Cancellara will never win.

The only mistake Sagan made was to sprint so early. Had he stayed behind Chava and waited for Ciolek or Canc to open the sprint, he would have won. I really do think that Sagan made a lot of right decisions today, although he didn't win.
