He wasn't just following the cars, he got a full on 60kph sticky bottle for an age! cheating is cheating, and that was as bad as it gets.

Not exactly, it wasn't like he physically grabbed on and they towed him back up. Even with getting a draft, the crash can only hurt his chances. If anything, due the circumstances it's a very mild form of cheating. And not a form of cheating that I'm going to get on his case for.
