After the prologue (stage 1) Mollema was 41 seconds down on Meyer. Mollema took 27 seconds off Meyer on stage 2. Yet he remains 34 seconds behind him on the GC.

Obviously I have missed something. There is 20 seconds gone AWOL somewhere. Could somebody explain?

20 second time penalty for taking a bidon somewhere in the last K's.

some magic energy in the bottle as seemed to do the job for him.

Roche showing some face time, will be useful as domestic for contador instead of an overly hopeful leader.

No way Sagan will be a factor today. That climb is too long and it makes sense to save it for next 3 stages.

Well, you never know with him. But yeah, it seems to be wise to save the energy for the upcoming stages. But, also, you never know how the peloton will pace itself on the climb. I would say, that he should stay in the peloton and wait how it goes. If it is too fast, than rest, if it's ok for him then he should try. Also 30 - 60 s on the top of the hill might not be enough for the first guys on him. That needs to be taken into account too when talking about him being a factor.

Depends on his form and the way it's raced. I'd expect a few big moves though, with Meyer losing the lead. Moser to win from a group of 10-12. I guess Sagan can make a minute up on the descent if he really wants!

Thanks. I actually noticed that happening and dismissed it from my mind.

Surprised they actually instituted a time penalty as opposed to just a fine.

I agree. Also taking into the account profile of the TdF stages, sagan should maybe be more aiming these kind of stages, where there's a big hill where normaly he wouldn't bother climb it at his best, because exactly these kinds of stages might be the only way to beat Cav for the green jersey. Something like the grindelwald stage of TdS 2011. Go in the break and have some head start on the long climb in order to be in the front group in the finish. Obviously, there has to be some downhill before the finish.

Quite funny and in the Dauphine they allow drafting in the TT with no penalties.

this is the result from the first mountain classification at ~60km in:

1 Gilbert (BMC) 5 Pt.
2 Breschel (TST) 3
3 Cancellara (RLT) 2
4 Kelderman (BLA) 1

so it looks like there is no botd yet

"Der Strassenweltmeister Philippe Gilbert (BEL/BMC) passierte als Erster bei der Roland-Bergpreiswertung Lorette bei Fribourg (3. Kategorie) vor Matti Breschel (DEN/TST) und Fabian Cancellara (SUI/RLT)."

Strassenweltmeister - Got to love German and their compound words :D
