I hiked in that kind of temp at Arches (Landscape Arch area) and at one point I felt like sitting down and not moving anymore, you just lose all your strength, it's scary...Happened to me twice in the same place actually, 16 years apart!

Yes I hiked up to Delicate Arch in 107 degrees. The car park at the bottom was full but only one other person was at the top. I was pretty fit at the time, I was running 40-50 miles a week but had to sit down for half an hour on my return to the car park. You can do some long lasting and serious damage to your vital organs, even if you're an elite athlete in those sort of temperatures!

Vital organs damage? Had never thought of that...but lots of people with similar experiences in Arches, that (beautiful) park should come with a warning! I guess there aren't too many other places you feel like going for a hike in the area so they're less dangerous...I can't even begin to imagine how the guys who did today's stage must feel like right now.

I have played soccer at 43 C and it's not nice at all.

In my younger days, my work colleagues and I used to play raquetball on an outside court when it was 116F and that wasn't too bad. We got pretty used to it.

I felt sorry for the guys today though - not fun.

So much for Andy Schleck returning to form.

Ed King just outside on top 20 on a MTF! I'm not sure if that says more about the quality of the field or his form

He needs to put some hard work to get picked for the tour.

Just finished watching the recording. To brutal for words :( I felt sorry for them, talk about suffering!

Great ride by Acevedo, Chapeau!!!!

Rogers showing signs of legs, good news for Saxo in July. Andy folded like a cheap suit.....

So glad that Serry made it over the line. He looked to be in real difficulty.

Tomorrow there will be many DNS I believe.

Hopefully that dreadful weather breaks soon, or they get to easier climes!

Wow. Never have I seen 50 degrees on my SRM. 200km was a huge day. Huge thanks to my team mates @Orica_GreenEDGE. Kept me cool all day.

People are now complaining the ToC now in May is a bad choice in schedule due to the bad weather (heat) but when it was in February it was bad as well due to the rain.

All I know is the weather is never bad, unless you have something important planned and sure enough the weather turns to $#!^ in no time. Maybe if they had stopped by the Indian Casinos and smoked the peace pipe with the chiefs things would be different :D

on the other hand...sick temps
A smart decision..outside of not doing a desert stage in May...would have been to cancel the climb and finish in town at least...lucky they didn't lose anyone from the heat...as far as I know :(

There’s a post earlier up this thread surmising that there may very well be some DNS tomorrow.

Oh wow, what a stage. One one hand, totally insane, on the other completely epic. These guys are true warriors! Just this season we got everything from snow, rain, wind, extreme heat ... you name it. This is why cycling is the best and toughest sport out there!

No doubt, lets see a football or basketball player ride 200K in 100+ degree weather at 23 mph average. :D

Gotta be said though, this race is MUCH better for having a weaker field where the Continental Pros feel they can compete and add more than break fodder to the race, and fewer star pros rolling round not giving a damn getting a bunch of airtime for sitting in the pack.

Having mid-sized names fighting to win is infinitely better than having big names not caring.

+1, while they're are a couple big names I would like to see fighting it out here, it's good to see the smaller conti teams here and able to fight for the win. They definitely care about the race and strive to do well in it more than the really big name WT riders do.

I liked having the heat being a factor. It isn't insurmountable, it's just another dimension that needs to be managed. Some obviously did it better than others.

There was a local race circuit a decade ago in my area that had a long 8% climb. It was facing north, and with the constant south winds in the summer, we'd ride up it with zero relative airspeed. At 100F, there comes a point where you cannot go any harder because of overheating, even if you have the legs. I learned to carry an insulated bottle, and when we hit that climb, I squirted it periodically on my back and legs so I could out ride the rest.

Just finished watching the stage, loved how all the riders practically collapsed as soon as they hit the line. :D
Great win for Acevedo, and Tejay looks to be climbing well. I've been waiting a while for him to win a stage race, this is the year he does it.
Also good result for Craddock and Bontrager, he's one of the riders I thought would do well.
Was half hoping to see a little more from Schleck, but if he's going to get a good result here I always expected it to come from the breakaway. So not too disappointed there.
Awesome to see Serry still managing to finish as well. :)

Mørkøv after the stage: "Today's stage was probably the hottest I've ever done. 45 degrees and on the last climb I saw two riders lying in the side of the road, knocked out by the heat."

What I dont understand, they shorten Milan San Remo due to horrendous weather and here the riders must race at 45 degrees Celsius? Guess there will be a lot of DNS today.

brutal, extreme conditions. chapeau to all the riders!
by the way if you forbid IV drips to the riders in these conditions, you are close to a criminal. it must have been horrible out there

acevedo!!! _O_ a beast at antioquia and still a beast here, awesome rider!

paco a little bit disappointing but i think he will take his revenge on mt. diablo

looks like the strava record was beaten by around three minutes even in these atrocious conditions
