here it is...
a nice little top 30 of the fastest ever on oropa...probably with a stage like 1993 or 1999 (or a itt like in 2007), domenico and quintana could have broken the 18 minutes barrier
http://www.climbing-records.com/2014/05/speeding-up-oropa-top-30-fastest-ever.html
1. 1999: 17:04 Marco Pantani 23.55 km/h
2. 1999: 17:50 Laurent Jalabert 22.54 km/h
3. 1999: 18:04 Gilberto Simoni 22.25 km/h
4. 1999: 18:07 Ivan Gotti 22.19 km/h
5. 1999: 18:07 Daniel Clavero 22.19 km/h
mitico clavero!

Cookster15 said:The Schlecks attempted several attacks in the Pyreenees - both Luz Ardiden and PDB. It was just that Evans was very strong that year and had no trouble closing then down. He also knew Frank could not TT so he just worried about Andy and let Andy worry about AC. I also noted Evans spun low gears on the climbs obviously to be able to respond to multiple attacks easier and not blow up. He only pushed big gears climbing on the stage 18 chase which was effectively a MTT for him. Plus the headwind meant noone was willing or able to attack him until Frank in the final 200m.
This. The Hitch said:In reality Evans like basso like Andy like contador (apart from the last few m of luz) just followed wheels riding very slowly in a big group of favorites who did nothing. On pdbf voeckler came in with them. That sounds to you like a mountain stage where schlecks are nonstop attacking and superchessmaster Evans brings them back with superintelligent tactical calculations?

They wasted such a difficult final climb and did nothing. Not to mention Luz Ardiden that was a perfect stage for a long range attack, perfectly designed stage.
The Hitch said:That's such a cop out. If it becomes justified to wheelsuck and gain the fruits of other people's labour, then everyone will just pretend to be weak and the few honest men will be punished.
You won't stop trying to change (manipulate?) history, will you?The Hitch said:In reality Evans like basso like Andy like contador (apart from the last few m of luz) just followed wheels riding very slowly in a big group of favorites who did nothing. Never understood the Evans hate on this forum, what a palmares, what a bike rider.Always exciting no,a physiological aberration and a born winner yes.
Cue a hundred Evans hating posts.![]()
auscyclefan94 said:Spot on. I wonder if there is equivalent hate for the way Quintana rode today. The wheelsucking crap that has been attached to Evans for years has long been put to bed. Find someone else to hate, yes that is directed to you The Hitch!
Escarabajo said:I think it has been. There is no exception in this forum. I think it is the nature of it. So don't worry. It is not just Evans. The problem is that Evans has done it many more times.
Not only that but Uran had Poels there working for him on the front which in turn helped Evans as well. So Evans had no reason or cause to ride in a manner that would have risked cracking/burning himself out in chasing Pozzo & Quintana.BigMac said:Huh? Where did I say anything of that?
I said you can't expect Evans to work when the only thing he will get for that is ruining is own race. That's beyond the realm of stupidity. Had Evans gone to the front he would later have cracked big time and would not have managed to even stay with Urán. He was clearly suffering there.
