This means "I'm an ******* and I use the biggest (and hopeful only) success of my career for a vulgar gesture just to show everyone how stupid I am".

Lots of reporters said it was a joke, it sounds like the best explanation but we've seen these things happen before haven't we.

I got no explanation for Pirazzi's gesture.
Apart from the fact he's a mental, but that was clear ages ago.

C'mon now, Veikannen was chasing with the rest of them for like 20k's. Plus the winning group were in plain sight for the most part... of course he f***ing knew.

Yeah... I was just about to post that tweet!

So, he wasn't joking. Something tells me he'll still laugh about it, though! :D

It was no joke. He was venting for the 5 years of criticism he was given in the Italian press for always messing it up when he was in a position to win.

Sometimes these racers take themselves far too seriously, in good times and bad.

He doesn't even realize why his gestures was a sign of weakness, rather than strength and that he gives negative publicity to the sport.

Probably never finished high school though.

Why would he not joke about it?

It's not something to cry about.

Suppose you're talking about Veikkanen.
He wasn't joking when he celebrated, he really did think he'd won. :p
Now, I think he'll be joking about it a lot!

Looks like whoever's in charge of updating that official Giro-conti need to be replaced, seems somewhat confused:

Was this actually Pirazzi's first ever win as a pro?

He won some races in the juniors, but nothing since turning pro in 2010 (bar mountain jerseys obviously).
