But teammates can help with pacing which is what uran did for Arroyo last time he was on zonc. Just the mental thing of - follow that wheel in front of you.

But yeah teammates are more meaningless on Zoncolan than anywhere else in cycling.

evans is a bad example. he has great resistance when in someone's wheel and that is 100% mental thing

That was his last real world class moment though, he was below his top level that Giro and abandoned a few days later. Of course he also won in Bilbao, but that Vuelta was a disappointment too.

Both explanations are plausible: Europcar taking over the lead in the peloton and a number of idiots in the car.
There is another (related to team car): Not enough distance to reach the break before Zoncolan.

Now, it was rather cheap from Wellens to attack Chalapud after not doing a pull. Both reached the break, though.
