Im also thinking Matthews has the potential to change the script this year, but we just have to wait and see. Full disclosure: he was who I picked as 'sprinter' for my fantasy teams, so fingers crossed.

Demare should have been an option. He has some weaknesses in chaotic sprints but he is almost as strong as Sagan uphill plus more powerful than Sagan if the route is up and down ( 4 days of D was a great example).
Plus only marginally slower in a classic bunch sprint than the big 3 ( Cav, Grei, Kit). Faster than Sagan or Degenkolb.
Big engine is important in TDF.

I think it will be difficult for Kittel, Cavendish and Greipel. Oyonnax and Nancy - impossible to survive.
St. Etienne and Bergerac 50/50. Maybe 1 or 2 of them.
0 points will hurt you if your opponent scores big.

I like Bling but I highly, highly doubt it. I can't think of a single scenario where he's better than Sagan.

I dont think he'll get green, or that he's better than Sagan, i just think he has the talent and race accumen to spread points out between the major contenders.

Matt White speaking.

"Michael is coming in to the Tour with a very good build-up and some of the biggest results of his career in the month of May. His goal in his first Tour de France is to win a stage and will have multiple opportunities to attempt that. The green jersey is not an objective. The objective is to win a stage of the Tour de France in his first start."

I find it pretty weird that Demare is not in the poll, imo he has more of a chance than Greipel and Cavendish:)

I don't believe anyone can really challenge Sagan, the jersey is his, they could give him today,it wouldn't mater.

I don't think the Vuelta points competition has the best design. The last three years have been won by Valverde and Mollema....both climbers.
And there's nothing wrong with that.

A points competition should be a competition between the riders who can most regularly place in the top 10 of a stage throughout a stage race. Not merely a sprinter's competition. The Vuelta does it right by making it a straight up brawl.

A lot of times though the points jersey is referred to as the "sprinters" jersey. Really it's the one jersey they can go after. If you regularly place in the top 10 of a grand tour than you will be competing for the yellow jersey.

That's a consequence of the Vuelta's fetish for MTF's.

Points competition exists to incentivize going full gas even on stages with no GC implications. If that inspires Bauke Mollema and Alejandro Valverde to go 100% at every finish line, toe-to-toe with faster guys, I'm all for it!

It's regularly called a sprinter's jersey because that's usually all it is. I disagree that it should be so.

Further, GT contenders don't frequently place in the top 10 of flat stage, just as sprinters don't frequently place in the top 10 in mountain stages. There lies the balance.

Maybe, but with the Tour's fetish for flat stages, sprinters would be the favorites anyway.

This year Sagan looks to be missing a little top end speed, meaning he may not place as high in the bunch sprints, and might lose out to some solid punchers on the tough ones. i think it's quite even. Biassed towards pure sprinters, but as there are 3 and I can't pick a winner and then there is Sagan, plus plenty of flies in the ointment to make it exciting.

Agree about Grepel. But Cavendish has actually shown motivation at times to go for intermediate sprint points. Nevertheless, I'd love to see Demare win the jersey just to give him confidence in the face of Bouhanni's arrogance and Sagan's seemingly inevitable dominance for the next few years.

I don't know particulars about their relationship but from what I've read, Bouhanni's the arrogant one in general.
