i think netserk or someother veteran should come to rescue here.

afaik, faster race gives the grouppetto enuf advanced info to know how to come within time.
in slower race, the fireworks go off very late. they may not be able to judge properly.

among all the stages i remember, the groupetto makes it in faster races. in slower races, i have seen them come just 5 min within time limit.

(it may just be me remembering such instances alone.)

I don't think you understand him. He's saying that he thinks since the stage today is short, even though the cut off would be extended by a high average speed, it's not extended by very much since the finish time will be comparatively small, considering there are still a load of huge mountains in it, hence it's harder to meet the time criteria.

Assume 40 km/h vs 52 for the flat first 50 km. Assume 28 km/h in both cases for the hills. Then the time difference for the whole stage is 17 minutes, however after the time limit is only 13 minutes later, meaning the sprinters have to climb for minutes faster.

Purito needs to go again soon and try to shake Majka, right? Or will he be content to fight with him for the points?

People need to stop going on about Valverde. He is cooked, and has been for days. Somehow he's managed to maintain his second but today he will almost certainly lose it. He certainly won't be gaining time on Nibbles, that's for sure.
