2014 Tour De France stage 1: Leeds › Harrogate (190.5km)

I don't understand the hostility against Cavendish. Every single superbly successful cyclist gets a torrent of hate from the peanut gallery. Maybe, just maybe, it takes above average self-esteem to reach the highest levels.

Amazing result from "Crash" Froome, finishing sixth. GC's over....

P.S. Cav dumped all of his 60-70 kph of kinetic energy into his shoulder. Painful to watch....

This is the way the crash happened:

Cav was holding position behind someones wheel (forgotten who it was)
Gerrans tried to force Cav off the wheel and take his position
Cav pushed back with his head to defend his position
Gerrans kept pushing and they both fell over

It was Gerrans fault. It doesn't matter if he was slightly in front of Cav, Cav had a right to defend his line.

Gerrans has as much right as anyone to be there. Presumable he was trying to place higher that Sagan, as there is a decent chance they will fight for yellow tomorrow...

My thoughts exactly. He would have had one hell of a chance.

He still may of course, depending on his condition.. He only needs a few seconds at the finish.

I think Coquard said it was his handlebar bumping with Gerrans' that precipitated the crash.

Really? You don't understand how an obnoxiously arrogant character who insulted colleagues and opponents, never took responsibility for his actions and always had an excuse for every time he didn't win, flipped off the crowd because the media pointed out he hadn't been in good form and was the winning arm of a team who many disliked owing to their ruthless efficiency making a large number of races unwatchably boring, might result in antipathy?

Cavendish now gets nothing like the antipathy he did in 2010-11, and rightly so as he has become a lot more likable since having to deal with competition.

Wrong. Cav was behind Gerrans, tried to move him to the left with his head. Gerrans was knocked off balance and as a consequense so was Cav. Both go down and then a third rider.

Cav had no business, from behind, trying to force Gerrans out of the way, who by the way didn't alter his line.

This was Cav's fault all the way. In fact, he should also get fined for being so wreckless.

Cav wanted to go into a gap that didn't exist. Once he realized that he tried to create the gap by force. Good thing not a lot of other riders went down as a result.

This is what happened.

OPQS went too early and Cav was swallowed by a bunch of riders and when he realized he was boxed in he tried to force his way out and did head Bu*t Gerrans, who didn't, and correctly so (Cav needs to learn to be a bit humble), gave in and in the end they went down.

Sad to see. Was hoping to see a primed Cavendish.

Cannondale and Lotto should have continued to race after the last climb. Would have made the finale even better.

Anyway congrats to Kittel with the win.

Too bad about Cav, but this is bunch sprinting.

Nobody did anything wrong, it was just a race incident.

The crowds are fantastic. Great roads, stunning landscape.

This is a guy who says Colombians do not belong in the Euro peloton because of their bike handling skills then goes crashing into people left and right and you're surprised he gets hate?
