Because they know Froome is not feeling peachy. It's perfect strategy, besides Nibali hates Sky as no other rider.

I have no idea why he hates them so deeply, but at the Olympic RR Nibali just kept spitting in the faces of Team Brittain (Sky) not caring about his own chances.

That really wasn't havoc. Froome still had a massive insermountable advantage so it made 0 difference to the yellow fight. As far as podium goes a few riders got a minute (no more) and none of them ultimately finished on the podium anyhow.
