I know that the water was coloured yellow to denote the jersey but it did just look more like a fountain of urine taken from doping control.

Go see a dr if your urine is that colour. Or stop overdosing on multi vitamins

Big fan of that Swiss jersey and Iam's kit in general. I think the best Tour kit for being both unique (advertising) and aesthetically pleasing is either them or Lotto, with Europcar in a close third.

looks like the peloton wants to catch the break before the first hill.

At this point the don't care about the break. Cannondale are trying to make sure the sprinters are too tired to make the climb, and the gc teams are jostling for position on the climb so they don't get caught out by a crash or a split

Alexandre Vinokourov: "It would be ideal to give the jersey away"

Questioned in the race by France Televisions, Astana's team manager Alexandre Vinokourov said: “We've got the lead with Vincenzo Nibali. The team has done the maximum and given 100% up to now. Today the stage is long so it's important to keep as much strength as possible. It would be ideal to give the yellow jersey away but we're not going to brake. It was a huge emotion to keep the yellow jersey on the cobblestones against Cancellara and Sagan. There are another two weeks of racing. Many things can happen.”

The bolded is what I suspected. They were in two minds over holding and/or giving up the leader's jersey. It would be a tough decision and a tougher idea to execute in the heat of the moment.
