I quite surprised that Degenkolb could not make it. It looks like he is not such a good climber afterall.

Just wondering, did something like this happen in real GT recently (late downhill attack against 2+ commited teams)?

Lovely ride by young Mr. Phinney. That's four
out of five stage wins for trackies. Interesting
that Taylor was experimenting with the 'Chris
Froome looking at stem/power meter technique'.

I doubt he bothers too much with California though. Check Matera in last year's Giro: he won a sprint there with Sergio Henao coming in 4th place.

Awesome Phinney. 2nd time he's done that now but this was 3 times further out than the last one.

Great win! Awesome descending skills and TT strength. I was surprised he was still there at the top of the climb as he is not exactly a climber. Kudos to you MiniPhinney!

It was win win situation for Phinney. There was nothing to lose or risk with that solo.

Even if he had not won it he would have got enough TV time to please the domestic sponsors then sitting in peloton.

Anyway very impressing performance and absolutely wonderful salute.

Strange race this. The stage before, the bunch sprint for 7th was strong enough to create a split.
This stage, virtually no bunch sprint. Sagan and Goss almost rolled over the line which the bunch spread out behind.
Mmmm.

That descent from Phinney was fairly spectacular - it looked like a straight motorway with no bends of any note in it, and he spent half his time gliding on his top tube, so how he managed to put 40 seconds into the group isextraordinary.

This why you need a big engined TT'er in your train and Cannondale are probably regretting not having QS's engines right now.

Stage 6. Last call for Sir Wiggo's competitors.

There will not be team mates at Wiggo's disposal when we hit the base of the last climb.

Hot like hell as well presumable.

He couldn't win the actual time trial, so he just invented his own instead!

Yeah! Boy, that was sure one to watch! I have to admit I was wrong about the attack going over the pass into Santa Barbera - because the road is good, and pretty straight - the curves are big sweepers. Makes it unlikely to gain time with descending skills - but absolutely perfect for Phinney.

exit, screaming: "YAY PHINNEY!"

Yeah, good thing he didn't have to drag that 85kg up the climb before using his weight advantage on the descent.

Give the guy a little credit. He laid it out there and it paid off.
