Elite Men:
Rigoberto Urán – Omega Pharma (BEL)
Winner Anacona – Lampre Merida (ITA)
Jánier Acevedo – Garmin Sharp (USA)
Sebastián Henao – Team Sky (GBR)
Julián Arredondo – Trek Factory (USA)
Esteban Chaves – Orica GreenEDGE (AUS)
Carlos Betancur – Ag2r La Mondiale (FRA)
Miguel Ángel Rubiano – Team Colombia (COL)
Carlos Julián Quintero – Team Colombia (COL)

is there any particular reason to leave out Duque? Do they only line him up for courses that are not suited to him?

Spain pre-selection:

Contador
Valverde
Erviti
I. Izagirre
G. Izagirre
Je. Herrada
Jo. Herrada
Castroviejo
Purito
Dani Moreno
Losada
Samu
Nieve
L.L. Sanchez
Navarro.

Valverde all in. Think that a sprinter, perhaps one of Lobato/Rojas/Barbero should have been added, kind of a Plan B.

Italy:

Aru
Bennati
D. Caruso
G. Caruso
Colbrelli
De Marchi
Gasparotto
Nibali
Nizzolo
Pozzato
Quinziato
Rabottini (out now)
Trentin

Valverde will sprint for them.I think they will try to get rid of Degenkolb,Bouhanni,Kristoff,Matthews or Sagan and sprint with Valverde from a group of 10-15 riders maximum.

Yeah I know. But in case that doesn't work out and a larger group arrives they may resent not having one. Lobato did well in MSR. Well, at least they could included one in the pre-selection, no harm at all.

Can the federation and the UCI oblige a cyclist to take place in the race and if he doesn't show up can he get a penalty? Contador said that he didn't want to take part.

I would add Pirazzi, at least it will be fun.

Yeah, i think he would be more useful than Aru. I'm a big Aru fan, but the circuit like this other rides are more useful.

All those silvers and bronzes show how strong and consistent he is, not that he is magically incapable of winning.

Saw a number of contenders yesterday.
*Australia will surely be in the mix: Hansen as a domestique, Matthews and Gerrans looking strong;
*Germany has Degenkolb, who impressed as he made it over a quite tough climb with the best, but can Germany have the team to support him?
*The Netherlands has Dumoulin, a man that oozes quality
* Belgian manager will have difficuly selecting a squad as there seem to be so many contenders for a place in the team, not only GVA, Gilbert and likely Boonen, but also Van Marcke, Wellens, Bakelants, Stuyven, Keikeleire.
* France lost an important rider yesterday, but still have Gallopin and Bouhanni
* Poland has Kwiatkowski, who we know can deal with the distance, the parcours and can sprint

I don't think the contenders for the Vuelta will be a factor here. Valverde's season has been so long, I cannot imagine he has the strength to win against all these fresher riders.
It'll be interesting how guys without a team will be doing (like Navardauskas).

Where can I find details of the course? Last year was 3000 metres of climbing, right? And 4200 this year, right? If so, it sounds weird that Kristoff, Degenkolb etc. are the favorites then.

stage 17 of la vuelta had 2800 meters of climbing. Degenkolb won. The profile looked like this:

Iirc altitude meters in Firenze were also around 4000. Difference is that Firenze had a flat 100k run-in before entering the circuit, while Ponferrada is nothing but circuit.

I am also surprised that people like Bouhani, Degenkolb are among top favorites. How can people compare GT stage with WCRR race.

It will be completely different race then Vuelta stage 17. :D

Italians and Spaniards will kill these semiclimbers.

I am very afraid, that Gerrans will wheelsuck his way into the rainbow jersey.

Australia look very strong at the moment and have got most bases covered. Gerrans to wheel suck if it gets into an elite group, Matthews if it comes down to a larger sprint and a couple of others in good form for a long distance break.
