I certainly didn't expect that result, but it is nice to see Froome and Contador in good form

Unlike you, I am not inclined to make any judgements based on a 5km climb after a long flat part in the first week of the Vuelta. History learns that would be rather foolish :)

History learns it would be foolish to trust any dutch rider in the mountains.

5 Spaniards in top 10. Pretty awesome for the hosts. Will be an exciting race. No way Valverde rides like a domestique anymore until he loses time (TT?)

That's the day Movistar are worried about it's hard to make up 2+ mins.

I dunno but it made it exciting for us because then everyone else had to attack from too far out too.

Sure, not complaining about that. But if he wanted to win, he should just have waited until 200 metres from the line.

One thing to take from this stage - Valverde will be on the podium at worlds.

I still think it's too flat. I would like it if he won though

You do realise that Valverde is the Spanish ITT champion, right?

Crazy uphill sprint, great win for Valverde after so much work, funny that commentators keep repeating that he was working for Quintana :D Froome looked great,Contador impressive too, this could turn in the best GT of the year.

Well, he was working for Quintana, but turned out to be much stronger than him.
Amazing ride by Valverde:

Dekker_Tiffosi:

Good luck finding mountainous stages in Vuelta. Those gradients were made for climbers like Nairo, he had strongest domestique in the race and blew it
And great job for the guy that was arguing Froome is nowhere near the best climber.....

Yeah, but he does put in a stinker in TT once in a while.
Wonder how he will do this time. Might be extra-motivated

A lot more wll be known after stages 9-11

Disappointingly anticlimactic.
But it's good to learn the statements before the race were just a pathetic attempt of deceiving.
This should develop in the best GT of recent seasons.

probably. it was a strong showing from him.

hope that quintana will improve and/or get to the longer climbs. long range attacks > drag racing.

good final k.
dont worry it will be maybe an epic battle Contador vs Froome vs Quintana all in good form.
A Dream

Maybe he thought that Froome doesnt look good and wanted to put time into him?
Anyway, he managed to crack Quintana (not his domestique thought) so he got some time over at least one of his rivals

The Froome I saw on the feed was not the Froome winning the TdF. He looked
tested by the pace on the climb. Maybe it's not his favorite kind of hill?

You've got your GC top-5 in there baring disaster. Quintana the likely winner with Contador likely being the only one to contest for first.

Purito form is really bad.Today he didn't have punch. An in form Purito would have destroyed this climb. Also Katusha wasn't very good.Moreno was very bad.I think this will be between Contador,Froome and Quintana.
Chaves really impressed me today.Kelderman,Uran and Martin the biggest losers.

Of course his form isn't really bad. He went too early, but still was able to drop Quintana with his attack. And he finished 4th in a really strong field.

But he isn't at 100%, that's true. He's good some good form, but i think he will finish 4th or 5th this Vuelta. I just hope he can win a stage, just like last year.

Valverde super strong. Makes me wonder when he finally falter a bit. Right now, he's the best in this race. Froome and Contador also really good.

Purito = Past it and massively overrated.

Purito is still good, today just wasn't his day.If he's overrated what about Martin who was suppose to win today or Kelderman,or Aru etc
