2015-17 Emerging Riders CQ game

Page 4 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
July, Year 1
And up to 2nd August.

I have tweaked the spreadsheet, so that I now have any rider eligible for the game on my radar, not only those who were actually selected (although I might still be missing those who had no CQ record before this year)

So this is not only the best of our picks in July, but also the best ones that we missed.

CAMPENAERTS Victor 152 0 teams (2nd in Tour de Wallonie)
ROGLIC Primoz 109 1 teams (Stage win and 4th overall at Qinghai Lake: MCMountain)

And as I have for the 2014-16 Emerging game, I can now reveal a "Collective Ignorance" team: the best 18 riders eligible for the game but overlooked by each and every one of us. Consider it a communal shaming, and its first incarnation is:

Standings
These are effectively end of year positions, but still two, hopefully higher scoring, years to come.
Multispeed has laepfrogged MCMountain to reach the podium, Skidmark's 3 place rise is the best in the top ten and Hilltop Finisher's top place this month (well, seven weeks) saw him rise 6 places.

I have some pretty bad picks who I fear won't improve the next two years. Still looking forward to the development of the young riders.
Are you gonna run a 2016-18 game too, Armchair cyclist?

Well... not bad. But I make a major mistake. I wanna elect Fernando Gaviria but I forget him in the moment of selections. Damn...

We in Spain are waiting with spectation the moment of play in the 2016-2018 edition. We wanna play next year. Some new players garanted.

End of Year One

Only 6 selected riders scored in the dog days of the season, but one of them scored massively and is on more than half the teams:
MARECZKO Jakub 356pts 17 teams (A decent haul in Tour of Hainan, then total domination of the Tour of Taihu Lake)
ÖRKEN Ahmet 102pts 1 team (Won Turkish Tours of Mevlana and the Aegean, with several stage wins in each, then all sorts of podiums in China)
KOZHATAYEV Bakhtiyar 62pts 1 team (7th overall in Tour of Hainan)
SILVESTRE Fabio Andre Tomas 25pts 2 teams (stage points in Hainan)
FILOSI Iuri 5pts 1 team (Hainan)
GODOY Yonder Eduardo 3pts 1 team (The Tour of Costa Rica even gets a mention!)

Mareczko rises from virtually nowhere to being the 4th highest scorer of the selected riders (behind Roglic, Naesen and Latour), so his terrific autumn makes some impact on the tables:

Since Mid-October
1 Vladimir 361
2 AlPacino, Blues_in_the_Bottle, GPBlanco, HilltopFinisher, HugoKoblet, ItalianGigolo, Jakob747, Joelsim, Josedin, Karaev, Kazistuta, Madrazo, Multispeed, Nuvolablu, Ruudz0r, The_Fool_on_the_Hill 356
18 DJSprtsch 102
19 Scrooll07 62
20 Ludwigzgz 25
20 Mutschi 25
22 RoteLaterne 3
23 Alykaptan, Armchair_Cyclist, Asdfgh101, Comodoro, Del1962, Flo, GeraintTooFast, Leadbelly, MCMountain, Skidmark, Snccdcno 0
CollectiveWisdom 356

To the end of Year One
Unsurprisingly, all the teams with Mareczko have moved up (except for Joelsim. who was already top) and all those who didn't have him lost places (except for DJSprtsch, who was already last. Blues in the Bottle, Al Pacino and Josedin had the biggest jumps: Ludwigzgz and Skidmark (the stars of the 2014-16 game), along with Alykaptan, take the biggest tumbles.

1 Joelsim 3656
2 Multispeed 3492
3 Madrazo 3380
4 Leadbelly 3151
5 ItalianGigolo 3096
6 MCMountain 3064

32 Scrooll07 1809
33 DJSprtsch 1208
Collective Wisdom 2904

At the end of the first year, our most popular 20 picks have varied considerably in how much they have deserved our trust:
NAESEN Oliver 506
LATOUR Pierre 453
MARECZKO Jakub 449
KÜNG Stefan 324
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 297
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian 249

FLAKEMORE Campbell 64
CHEVRIER Clément 50
MULLEN Ryan 44
QUINTANA ROJAS Dayer Uberney 43
VERVAEKE Louis 30
(Sadly, two of these, Power and Flakemore, seem unlikely to make much further contribution to the game)

Some fairly high scorers were picked by at least some of us:
(Rider/points/teams)
ROGLIC Primoz 519 1
NAESEN Oliver 506 10
LATOUR Pierre 453 23
MARECZKO Jakub 449 17
KÜNG Stefan 324 21

KULYK Andriy 202
WÜRTZ SCHMIDT Mads 200
KAMP Alexander 195
OCKELOEN Jasper 183
(all of these now have exceeded 200 lifetime points: having missed them for this 2015-17, you can't have them for the 2016-18 edition)

The total of the best 18 picked riders: 5276
The total of the best 18 unpicked (but eligible) riders: 4862

CQ have done their name changes at some stage in the year: 8 teams (Alykaptan, Blues in the Bottle, HilltopFinisher, ItalianGigolo, Joelsim, Karaev, Kazistuta, Madrazo) have had their scores under-reported by 121 because Lorrenzo Manzin's forename has one more r than heretofore, and a rediscovered accent in the name of Aurélien Paret-Peintre has been depriving DJSprsch of 18 points.

Corrected standings:

Year 2 month 1:
Time to step forward

There has not really been much expectation on our riders in year 1: this year we will see who is looking likely to be a really significant result earner.

The real proof of that will not be seen in January, but who has used this month to lay down a marker?

I figured I might as well write an assessment of my team post-year 1.

About where I hoped or better:

Oliver Naesen
Pierre Latour
Stefan Kung
Miguel Angel Lopez
Fernando Gaviria
Dayer Quintana

This is in order starting with the rider I'm most pleased with. Naesen almost did a little too well - I was hoping for a solid year, another even more solid year at TSV, and then a WT ride. I don't know if he's ready. But I was worried last year when QST picked up Lampaert and that worked out, so maybe IAM will work out for him. Latour I'm not worried about at all, and once he's over his mono Kung should be great. Lopez is primed to be a world-destroyer; I'm probably more surprised with his last year than anyone's, since I thought he'd be buried at Astana year 1. But they can't keep him down, he's gonna be a white hot talent for sure. Gaviria didn't score a billion points yet, but he didn't have a pro ride last year so that was to be expected. Quintana didn't have a great year but is here mostly because he's already gotten a good start to year 2.

I still believe they have the talent but am starting to worry:

Sebastien Henao
Thomas Boudat
Ryan Mullen
Louis Vervaeke
Mathieu Van Der Poel
Matej Mohoric
Clement Chevrier

It's unfair to say I'm worried about Henao, but I expected a little bit more. Still plenty of time, although Sky just kind of tucked him away after the Giro last year. Boudat is where I expected about, but I want more road from him this year. Mullen I dunno, I knew he wouldn't have a pro ride until this year but he's gotta start producing fast to catch up. Vervaeke I'm willing to give a mulligan as he had a terrible year. VDP was never going to be a full-time road racer in this 3 years but I thought his talent was such that he couldn't really be held back in whatever 1.1 races he took part in. Mohoric I'm still patiently waiting for, and Chevrier I clearly believe something is there because I picked him again this year.

Uh Oh:

Ruben Zepuntke
Robert Power
Karel Hnik
Fredrik Ludvigsson
Nicola Ruffoni

Zepuntke was a full-on meh last year. Power's problem is his health-related break, clearly not talent. Hnik really didn't do anything with what I thought would be a sparse ProConti team with lots of chances, and hopefully he can move on with an even sparser ProConti team this year. Ludvigsson has been absolutely invisible, and Ruffoni went from promising fast guy to 'why didn't he race more than like 10 days after May'? So yeah, I'm pretty worried about these guys' lackluster performance.

While I'm not sold on Mareczko's greatness (I feel like the majority of his points were due to being in a race with zero competition at the end of the year), I'd gladly take him for any of these guys now.

My not so successful team is scoring:
LATOUR Pierre 40
QUINTANA ROJAS Dayer Uberney 3
VLIEGEN Loïc 5

and resting instead of racing:
La Méditerranéenne (2.1)
EIKING Odd Christian
LEDANOIS Kevin

I'm sure Latour, Lopez, Küng, Vliegen are good picks. Eiking and Mullen have to make the transition to riding in the pro peloton, Quintana is promising this year, Vervaeke can be. Rybalkin I don't know, at least he should race more this year. Van der Poel wants to ride MTB in Rio, don't expect anything from him this year on the road. Beltran and Godoy don't have a team, Skjerping and Zepuntke are domestiques.

Year 2, Month 2

If this going to be any selected rider's big breakthrough year, none of them showed it in February: the scores are less impressive than those riders a year behind in their development that are in the 2016-18 game. Here are the best of those we chose just over a year ago:
LATOUR Pierre 66pts 23 teams (7th in Bessege GC, 10th in Laigueglia)
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 61 28 (4th in his national TT, and one stage in Langkawi (GC points in March update))
ROGLIC Primoz 55 1 (5th in Algarve GC)
WISNIOWSKI Lukasz 54 6 (5th in K-B-K)
CICCONE Giulio 50 2 (5th in Estruchi, 12th in Laigueglia)
ANDREETTA Simone 49 5 (8th in Lugano, and some Mediteraneenne pts)
BUCHMANN Emanuel 34 6 (12th in Oman GC)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 30 14 (stage points in Tour La Provence)
WACKERMANN Luca 30 3 (13th in Dubai GC)
RAMIREZ CHACON Brayan Stiven 30 1 (2nd in his national TT)

The popularity of the months top two scorers mean that most team scores for February are closely grouped:

Year 2 Month 3 (to 3rd April)

Rather strangely, the year 2 riders have higher points than the Year 3 riders in the 2014-16 game update that I did yesterday. No-one knew enough about Gaviria, Moscon, Lopez, Oomen or Wisniowski in January 2014 to have selected them...

GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 169pts 14 teams (6th in Gent-Wevelgem, stage win in Tirreno-Adriatico, 10th in Dwaars door Vlaanderen)
LATOUR Pierre 140 23 (2nd in Criterium Int)
WACKERMANN Luca 129 3 (won no less than 3 2.2 tours in Algeria in the month)
MOSCON Gianni 123 3 (3rd in Settimana Coppi e Bartali, 8th in Nokere)
JARAMILLO DIEZ Daniel Alexander 120 1 (2nd in Langkawi, so mainly earned in February)
PEDERSEN Mads 111 2 (won Gent-Wevelgem U23, and top ten in De Panne GC)
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 105 28 (3rd in Langkawi, but points logged in March)
OOMEN Sam 103 2 (3rd in Crit Int)
WISNIOWSKI Lukasz 95 6 (3rd in Driedaagse van West-Vlaanderen)

Scores this month
A truly outstanding performance by Madrazo, with a score 225 higher than second place. The only 1000+ monthly scores in the first edition came in April of Year 2, so he has beaten that landmark.
1 Madrazo 1013 (Gaviria, Latour, Wackermann, Moscon and Lopez)
2 GPBlanco 788 (Gaviria, Latour, Lopez and Wisniowski)

Standings
That huge score brings Madrazo tight onto Search's heels, but the highest placed rider to have moved is Hugo Koblet, 6th from 8th. A three place rise brings GPBlanco into the top ten (replacing Hilltop Finisher), and a four place jump makes Asdfgh101 the top vaulter of the month, while Alykaptan goes 7 places in the wrong direction.

Year 2 Month 4 and including 1st May

In the game a year older than this, Julian Alaphillippe was getting second place in two classics during April of Year 2, and Simon Yates was top 5 in Pais Vasco. This time around, such emergence has not yet happened. But this is what the main scorers in our game this month did manage:

Standings

Madrazo was already 3rd at the end of year one, since when his monthly positions have been 6th, 3rd, 1st and now 1st again: it is not much surprise he has taken the lead. He and Joelsim are opening an increasing gap on the chasers, but if this were a grand tour, we are only on about Monday of week 2. Nuvolablu and Kazistuta move into the top ten with jumps of 4 and 6 places respectively.

No position changes in the top 6, but behind them MCMountain, Jakob and Kazistuta are all moving in the right direction, and a little further down, Alykaptan has the best rise.

Year 2, Month 6 but a bit early, 30 May to 19 June (I'll be busy next week setting up the TdF game, and for 3 weeks after it running that)

Rider points this "month"
1 rider definitely dominates, and he is the most popular pick of the lot, only 5 of us don't have him.
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 360 points 28 teams (Overall GC win in Tour de Suisse, with 100 sundry stage and classification points from the same race)
TURGIS Anthony 127 1 (stage win and GC 4th in Tour de Luxembourg for Nuvolablu)

Standings
Novulablu moves up 5 places from 10th to 5th: Italian Gigolo is the only one of the non-Lopez teams that was not in a terminally dreadful position before Tour de Suisse, so is the biggest victim. Madrazo increases his lead.

This has been a short month: next update likely to be to the end of July, but keep an eye out for the Tour de France game coming soon.

Dropbox file

Year 1 month 7 and through until 7th August, so given that I took the June results early, this is actually a 7 week month.

This month and a bit...

Fewer good scorers in this game than among those in the game a year behind them: not yet good enough for much Tour impact, too good for the minor distractions in July?

BUCHMANN Emanuel 145pts 6 teams (21st in the Tour de France, 14th in Rio, and 4th in Rad am Ring, a race that had totally passed below my radar)
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 143 14 (2 stage wins and a 2nd in Poland, with three days in yellow and 7th in Hallle Ingooigem)
WARBASSE Larry 96 2 (7th in Tour of Poland GC for Flo and Scrool07)
MARECZKO Jakub 95 17 (3 stage wins and a 2nd in Qinghai Lake)
MOSCON Gianni 84 3 (4th (TT) and 5th (RR) in Nat Champs for Jakob747, Madrazo, Nuvolablu))
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao 79 9 (6th in Nat Champs, 12th in Utah GC)
ZURLO Federico 69 2 (Stage win and GC 10th in Qinghai Lake for Multispeed and Ruudz0r)
MCLAY Daniel 64 4 (one 3rd, and 3 other stage top 10s, in the Tour de France for Alykaptan, Comodoro, Jakob747, Kazistuta)
ROGLIC Primoz 62 1 (10th and 26th in Rio, 5th in Nat Champs, a stage podium and some GC points in Poland for MC<ountain)
MARINI Nicolas 50 1 (a first, a second and a third in Qinghai stages for Hilltop Finisher)

but we all missed:

Standings
The top two look fairly well established and both scored well this month, with large points gaps either side of third place. You'd have to go down to 6th to find the first change in position, where monthly runner-up has risen from 10th, while MCMountain made exactly the opposite journey. Josedin, despite being a distinctly average 14th in the monthly score, has the equal biggest (4 place) rise

Over the two years thus far, the best possible team is:
NAESEN Oliver 1149 10
LATOUR Pierre 1098 23
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 1060 28
ROGLIC Primoz 1005 1
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 984 14
MARECZKO Jakub 855 17
CLAEYS Dimitri 814 0
TORRES AGUDELO Rodolfo Andres 805 0
MOSCON Gianni 742 3
MCLAY Daniel 703 4
BETTIOL Alberto 661 0
SMITH Dion 641 0
BEVIN Patrick 600 0
TURGIS Anthony 596 1
CAMPENAERTS Victor 573 0
KÜNG Stefan 549 21
BUCHMANN Emanuel 524 6
OOMEN Sam 521 2
for a total of 13880 points (Madrazo currently running at 68% of that)

You'll notice that that selection includes a number of riders that nobody thought of at all in compiling their teams: if we remove them, the best selection is:
NAESEN Oliver 1149 10
LATOUR Pierre 1098 23
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 1060 28
ROGLIC Primoz 1005 1
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 984 14
MARECZKO Jakub 855 17
MOSCON Gianni 742 3
MCLAY Daniel 703 4
TURGIS Anthony 596 1
KÜNG Stefan 549 21
BUCHMANN Emanuel 524 6
OOMEN Sam 521 2
CAPIOT Amaury 496 1
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian 492 24
VLIEGEN Loïc 431 3
EIKING Odd Christian 423 10
GEOGHEGAN HART Tao 419 9
MARINI Nicolas 419 1
with a total score of 12466

By contrast, the best selection from among those we overlooked is:
CLAEYS Dimitri 814
TORRES AGUDELO Rodolfo Andres 805
BETTIOL Alberto 661
SMITH Dion 641
BEVIN Patrick 600
CAMPENAERTS Victor 573
FRAILE MATARRANZ Omar 520
ANDERSEN Søren Kragh 505
MEURISSE Xandro 472
BRANDAO Joni Silva 466
MOAZEMI GOUDARZI Arvin 464
WÜRTZ SCHMIDT Mads 429
LAPORTE Christophe 426
GERTS Floris 416
VAN LERBERGHE Bert 398
CALMEJANE Lilian 390
VAN AERT Wout 362
KAMP Alexander 360
Totalling 9302 points: Madrazo is beating the Collective Ignorance team.

He is also beating the official Collective Wisdom team (most popular picks), which would be in 6th place with 7843, earned thus:
LATOUR Pierre 1098
LOPEZ MORENO Miguel Angel 1060
GAVIRIA RENDON Fernando 984
MARECZKO Jakub 855
KÜNG Stefan 549
HENAO GOMEZ Sebastian 492
EIKING Odd Christian 423
POWER Robert 325
BOUDAT Thomas 325
RUFFONI Nicola 318
MOHORIC Matej 311
QUINTANA ROJAS Dayer Uberney 224
HNIK Karel 222
MULLEN Ryan 209
VERVAEKE Louis 139
VAN DER POEL Mathieu 131
CHEVRIER Clément 103
FLAKEMORE Campbell 64

but that is because I put the 4 riders on 10 teams into alphabetical order to create that team. If I had put in Naesen instead of Chevrier, it would have 8714 points and be in 3rd overall.

But there is also the need to acknowledge the mistakes made by at least some of us:

BOLIVAR HERNANDEZ Isaac 0 4
ZORDAN Andrea 0 3
OWSIAN Arkadiusz 0 1
