It was similar to Viviani's Giro stage at the end - get him into the mix and let him pick wheels. Seems effective enough when the sprint field is not first class, and perhaps the trains not there to control the final.

Greipel went a bit early I thought. There was talk of a bad knee too, although it didn't hamper him noticeably in July.

he also was on holiday with the family for the past week. Might just need one or two days to get back in racing trim.

Boonen has started to go backwards as soon as he's launched his sprint a couple of times this year, but wow, this one was ridiculously bad

Boonen by his own admission has never felt comfortable in large bunch sprints since Suisse 2010 crash with Cav/Haussler.Doesn't mean he can't win an odd one but not really his thing these days which is understandable.

So why does he bother trying?

Because he's paid to race.

Because he's paid to race.

Which he could do on later stages that suit him.

My interpretation of Boonen's comments pre Eneco were that he wanted a stage win for his confidence before the Worlds, higher class field than recent races he's won at.If there's any risk involved in the sprint he will back off,its not a secret he feels this way,its a matter of record for the last 5 years in several interviews.

Let's hope UCI realises how dangerous he is and say against Van der Schueren that he'll never be allowed to ride a team car again.

He rode on to the sidewalk yesterday almost crashing into a father and his little son. Police saw it. He's suspended today.

Very easy for Greipel.

I hope Breschel ain't hurt because of that silly crash from Vanspeybrouck in the last k.

Perfect leadout, best this season, except maybe the Etixx one for Cav in Turkey when they dropped the peloton.

And Boonen went forwards for a change!

Textbook stuff. Just as they looked like they might get swamped, the next guy in line steps it up a gear and then Greipel launches himself strongly and right on schedule.

It was a lot less crowded today. Almost a reduced field sprint, as Tom likes.

Tomeke not scared today

Low speed like today he doesn't get scared and easily wins even when he was in the wind way too early.
