I hope Contador is getting a nice training ride, because if he's going all out just for revenge, he's an idiot. He doesn't need the GC time, and he's very unlikely to catch the break for a stage win.

Really, really, really don't understand everyone here praising him. Strategically, this appears to be a very dumb thing to do.

I'll eat some of my words if he wins the stage, but if he doesn't, this will come back to haunt him at the TDF. And right after he said every move had consequences.

Can everyone just calm down about this? Sheesh, lets just enjoy THIS race, and stop worrying about the Tour! Just enjoy what you are watching NOW, and stop worrying about what might happen in another 6 weeks!

It's ok if you don't care about the Tour, but you need to accept that lots of fans do.

Courage is Hesjedal's second forename ain't it?

Need a lot of courage to wear those absolutely dreadful sunglasses. What a berk he looks.
All of these glasses now are FUGLY! The new Oakleys that Cav and the like are wearing are just as hideous. They are way too big now, who wants a giant ski-goggle tan line on their face?

why does Contador feel the need to push on as much as he has? just no need for it...

Because he is a rider in the mold of Hinault that is why!!

+1 billion, carol. seems the young 'uns here know plenty about watts, climb times, etc. etc. etc. - but are lacking where actual racing and 'no mr. nice guy' is concerned.

all i can add about what is happening in today's stage is:

"Cycling isn't mathematics," Alberto Contador said after crossing the line in Aprica, and he wasn't wrong, certainly not after a stage so enthralling that the extension of his overall lead at this Giro d'Italia to more than four minutes felt like something of an afterthought. "These are the kind of stages that people remember."

I only started tuning in when Contador had already attacked and Landa and Aru were in a group with the others. Can someone briefly summarise what happened up to that point? Why did Landa have to bridge a gap to the Aru group?

Landa had a mechanical or was caught behind a crash that happened while Tinkoff-Saxo was pulling massively at the front just before the climb. Kreuziger and Contador went off the front a la Basso and Contador in Ruta del Sol, after which Contador took off

Landa had a mechanical before the climb, Saxo drilled it and Contador pretty much attacked as soon as the climb started. Not sure how far Landa started the climb from Contador's group but it was pretty far, probably 1min+
