Are you surprised? When on Earth did he showed something in this Giro that showed he would ride like a beast today? He was finished yesterday.
Or is this his bad day?
I would say the fact he could stay with Aru and Contador while his strongest discipline in the Time Trial suggested he would probably be in the top 3 today, if he didn't win it. Clearly he won't even get near that, but it wasn't such a stretch to expect that before the events of the last few days.
He stayed with them on fairly easy stages the first week of the Giro. He has ridden passively
Ow I wasn't saying he was as good as them, but most of the time there were 3 (once Uran got healthy 4) riders at the front of the race, and Porte was one of them, which means he's at least top 5 in the mountains.
If he's top 3-5 in the high mountains you'd expect him to be top 3-5 in the time trials as well.
The fact he's not near that (if it's not just the wind) means something is wrong, more than him not being good enough, either mental issues or physical.
But like others are saying, let's hold off on any conclusions, because there are more and more reports that the wind changed.
Last minute update: VDB is almost a minute ahead of Porte, now he's a good time trialist himself, but being that far behind VBD is worrying to say the least.
