One man from Astana was ready to show some initiative, but the rest of the team didn't respond. Pathetic.

Good to see Tinkoff being a little bit of guts at least.

This would never had happened with a Sky-led peloton.
Actually you are right, but if sky would ride here, we also wouldnt have any action before the last climb, so at the end it doesnt make a big difference.

Slightly surprised Henao or Kiry isn't in this break.

Only two guys left. At this pace he needs to attack on the Cobertoria or what.

It's a shame the break is so far away. With this pace they could probably take back 8-9 minutes from this point.

If Tom limit his loses to 1 min today, I honestly think he will win. They need to take more time.

Opinions on this seem to differ greatly. Flecha just said they won't lose more than 1:30 in the ITT

Them losing only 1:30 is near physically impossible unless Dumoulin is very tired.

A big guy like Tom who is the second-best WT time trialist should easily be able to take minutes on tiny climbers in such a time trial. He was able to take more than a minute and twenty on Majka and Purito in a 14k TT.

If the climbers gain 1:30 or more on Dumoulin today, then the GC is not over yet. 1 min is not enough IMO.
That's right.
Flecha probably meant that Rodriguez, Majka or Aru would only lose around 1 and a half minutes, if they are allowed to race with mechanical doping.

Rodriguez and Majka already had a taste of TD power earlier this year, in Utrecht, in 13.8 km Majka lost 1' 15" to TD, Rodriguez lost 1' 18".

And that was in 13.8km.

The upcoming ITT will be 38.7, almost triple. Just looking at the cold facts (not opinions) anyone can conclude that more than 3' it is possible.

Having said that, I will add that ITT at the end of a GT, depend not only on the particular talent for ITT, but also in your current state of form.

IMO TD will take somewhere between 2' 20" and 2' 50"

The 1' 30" Flecha is talking is just pie in the sky.

This isn't a one week stage race.
In the third week of a grand tour it's quite normal for a climber to beat a specialist time trialist, especially when said TTer isn't used to going all out every day for GC. No offense, but not making the assumption of what will happen in a third week time trial is one of the basic rules of following a grand tour :)

That said, I'd quite like it if Tom won.

When TD was interviewed on telly two or three days ago, he said the gap could be 1 minute if he’s bad or three if he’s good. He might have changed his views since then.

Hopefully Lawson can stay with Dumoulin until the last climb. Such a loyal squire, pity Giant didn't bring more guys for the mountains. As they said, never in their wildest dreams would they be so well placed in GC.

Allez Tom!

I hope Purito and Majka will gain some time today.

Katusha and Saxo are the only teams who have pulled so far.

Could the break be brought back here? They could lose 5 minutes on this next climb if this pace is kept up.

Dumoulin was going full gas in Utrecht. I doubt Majka and Rodriquez were doing that too. Such speculations are pointless unless we would know riders actual FTP and CdA. Also fatigue and form at the day of ITT are important, and those are impossible to predict. Dumoulin is most likely to gain time over other GT contenders but it is hard to tell if it will be 1 or 4 minutes

Really nice job by the youngsters from Tinkoff in this Vuelta. Hansen, Poljanski and McCarthy all doing a great job.
