Mind you, from the start to the first check is the part that doesn't suit Dumoulin as well as the rest...

Aru has a nice position nowadays; he's obviously been working really hard on it. Paying off so far.

Let's see if Dumoulin manages to keep that lead, so far everyone lost major time to Bodnar on the second part.

Majka was already 20/30 seconds behind under that banner
Hopefully will put to bed the myth that he is a decent time triallist on the flat; despite never having had a decent result on such a course.

Aru was 30 seconds slower than Dumoulin under the red and blue banner. Probably around 45 seconds at the first intermediate.
Majka has lost one minute already.

Time trials in grand tours really need something like a virtual head to head using GPS, or at very least more intermediate time checks than there are currently. The last charity run I did in my local park had the same number of intermediate time checks as a GT time trial.

Individual starts in cross coutry skiing are indeed nicer to follow as there are intermediate checks roughly every 8-10 minutes shown and every 3-5 minutes available. But it's obviously easier with 5 km loop.

With the transponders they trialled in the Tour (I know they're only on the bikes of some teams), you could have:
* a virtual map showing where rider A (who started first) was when he had the same time elapsed as rider B has now
* live time gaps between any riders at any point they've all covered
* other useful stuff

With the above or with a lot more intermediate splits you could have something like the graphs that were going around after the hour record attempts, showing the relative pacing of different riders on different sections (vs different laps for the hour record) showing if riders were speeding up or slowing down relative to others.
