Cycling has improved a lot in that way, but riders are more exposed to heath problems a well.

Herrera was very skinny as well. He would loose massive times on the flat TT's.

They ride up the mountains faster nowadays and the thinner they look the better they usually do.

Better equipment, etc. There is only one guy I can see in the current bunch who could ride with Hinault, Fignon and Lemond in their prime with them using present day equipment and training methods; Contador.
