Kruijswijk also really good today. totally not his climb. Will wreck face all over the place in the 4th week

Surprising early form unlike last year. Bodes well.

Dumoulin doing what he did in Vuelta. Gaining time everywhere in first part of the race. Smart. I doubt he will be able to hold on to the lead though (unless Nibali is in bad shape and Astana won't bother driving the pace), but for sure will make things fun

Is it just me, or have Nibali's attacks been kinda weak since his last tour win(and to be fair, his top competition wasn't present there to gauge it anyway)? He can never seem to make them stick after he gets clear and ends up losing time whenever he tries.
You mean his Tour GC win or his stage win last year because the latter was also very impressive.

Dumoulin won't hold this against landa, majka,...and his team sucks too

Given that a lot of us considered Valverde to be a big favourite to win the stage, his performance is shocking.

I can understand Fulgsang sprinting for the bonus, but not helping Zakarin. Dumoulin and Pozzovivo...
He doesn't give a **** about Nibali. He's here to ride his own chances.

Why should he ... Nibali is leaveing astana and said some not very nice things about his tdf 2015 domestiques which includes fulgsang

I'd agree with you, but a lot of people will bring up his Lombardi win, especially as the last example of when he has intentions on peaking.

I think he will ride status quo this Giro, but any other rider stepping up/riding above and beyond, like Zakarin, TD, Chaves, for example, could take his place on the podium.

Don't take conclusions so early, this means nothing.

Stoked for Wellens. Nice celebration sending kisses to the crowd. You go!

The riders are on the rope. On a easy climb like today, we saw some real damage between the GC guys.

One of the big three will lose massive time in the first big mountain stage.

It's just bizarre.

How can a three time GT winner who achieved a dominant level in July 2014 be unable to replicate that level for 2 years? He isn't old, he can't possibly have forgotten how to train.

And even though Froome and Contador crashed out and Quintana wasn't there, Nibali's performance in that Tour was utterly dominant.

Now he's getting beat by a lot of riders.

We shouldn't ride him off yet but that was a worrying sign.

False. The first week of any grand tour is meant for wild speculation and unwarranted celebration/doomsaying.

This means everything.

Agree, we have almost a week until the next decent mountain stage, although there is the weekends TT of course.

Despite the fact he's a great champion with a big palmares, you always get the idea he's beatable in the mountains. He's not a constantly dominant figure like Contador or Froome. He's a great allround rider, but he's has his off days uphill.

Exactly, we should remember the first half of the 2014 Giro.
Zakarin could become a thread for the favourites, but this was just the classic first Giro MTF, the high mountains are something different.

I meant his GC win.

His stage win last year was a fantastic, but not really the same situation I'm referring to. He was far enough off the lead for the strongest riders to give him the leeway, and he did attack while Froome was having a mechanical issue - whether he knew it or not.
