I can't see why any sprinter would skip the Giro, there are 4-5 sprint stages in week one, they could just abandon after and prepare for July. Hoping to see the best against the best instead of the Italian second-tier sprinters

Be very interesting to see how much Kuba can compete, especially against the slightly more hyped Caleb Ewan. Vivani and Demare will both have good races, I predict.

We have been talking about the GC rider, but how about the sprinters? Who's going?

Modolo and Nizzolo for sure, probably Demaré too and Kittel right? Who else and how do you rate the Giro-sprinters?

Viviani. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks! I have been following the forums for a year or so - Figured I better join! :)

Do Gazprom have any sprinter?

Does the fact that Cancellara is ridding leaving Nizzolo with the best lead-out?

Valverde will be good surrounded in the mountains. With Amador, D.Quintana and domestique Jo.Herrada already confirmed.

If Valverde brings his A game, the race is that much better for it. Landa, Zakarin, and Dumoulin all lack the GT consistency to be seen as guaranteed contenders, but Valv, if he can find his Tour '15 form (or close to it) will seriously challenge Nibali.

Valverde found that form exactly once outside of Spain during his career. Ain't gonna happen. Ain't gonna podium if Landa, Nibali & Zakarin are full power.

You forgot Dumoulin, Chaves, and couple of others.. What a nonsence! Valverde in top form, and without bad luck, ain't gonna finish below 2nd step of the podium

He won't finish 2nd, 3rd if he's lucky. If you want we can have an avatar bet, the winner picks an avatar that the looser has to keep until the start of the Tour. :)

You didnt really clarify that..

Its pretty harsh nevertheless. He was the 3rd-4th best rider in 2013, never mind his 7th overall, and abandoned in 2005 after beating Los Angeles on Courchevel. He has been really good post ban, 2013 and 2015.

In my opinion Valverde he was even stronger at the 2013 Vuelta, he climbed Pena Cabarga and the Angliru faster than Cobo and Froome in 2011. I assume that Visconti will also ride the Giro, so he'll have lots of climbing domestiques, his team should be really strong.

Staubsauger referred to GT's out of Spain, but I think his best Vuelta clearly was 2012. If he didnt lose that time early on, he could easily have won that Vuelta. Along with TdF 2015, I think that has been his finest climbing display in a GT.

...but what are Zakarin's grand tour credentials that give him this edge over Valverde in your eyes? What has he done in terms of reaching the podium of grand tours that makes him deserve such lofty position above someone who just last year reached his highest position in the final gc at the Tour last year?
