The 2016 Vuelta a Espana kicks off anything but gently on Saturday, with a medium length team time trial seemingly designed to reveal any potential weaknesses in the GC candidates and their teams, and perhaps create some important time gaps.

I fully back BMC on this course. The parcours is for rouleurs and BMC has plenty of them. Sky and Movistar also have strong guys for this course. Unfortunately for Alberto, his team, as always, isn’t strong enough to challenge for the win here but I hope they’ll be close.

Why aren't Astana last if they've got last year's winner?
Because last year's winner is not participating, I guess?
So...? Hincapie started the 2006 Tour de France prologue last despite Lance not participating.

It's up to the race organisers who to give the Number 1 if the previous year's winner has not turned up. Some give it to the first in the alphabet (tends to be AG2R), others to the team of whoever won the previous year and others give it to someone with a sentimental reason, like Valverde for the Vuelta, and others even just give it randomly. Don't know how it works for TTTs, though.

Anyway, it would make sense to not follow a strict rule, but to base to start list on some mixture of favourite-to-win-the-race and favourite-to-win-the-stage for entertainment reasons.

Quintana is the highest finisher in 2015 that is riding this year. that might be the reason that Movistars has the lowest numbers

Lopez with big technical problems just 2 minutes into the TTT. Complete disaster for Astana.
How much time did they lose?

31:35 is their finishing time.

We'll see where they stand later.

Looks like Kirby has got a thing for Scarponi this Vuelta. No Reichenbach afterall. He still has Simon "should have been Milano - San Remo winner" Clarke though :D
