Quintana ain't no Jalabert. Too bad for Gesink. But his shape looks fine. He might still win the Aubisque stage on Saturday!

Is this the first time Contador and Quintana have properly gone mano-a-mano in a big GT climb?

Yeah, before that I think there was only the 2014 Tirreno stage on the Passo Lanciano

We really are in the era of big mountain trains - if Sky weren't around there'd be a lot more talk about how crazy strong Movistar are. Astana have had very strong trains at times too.. It's weird watching highlights of the 2006-2011 period now when the teams seemed weaker and you'd get groups containing just the team leaders a lot more often. Viva la Vuelta!

Lol Froome and Bala dropping Contador. Bala to drop next as they take Scarponi and blast past Fraile (great ascent by him BTW).

Froome goes alone as I write this. I know it's too late but what a sight would it be to see him catch Nairo still, hah!

Quintana peaking a month too late.

Contador completely gone, he is gonna lose a minute plus; Froome yoyo has reached new levels, and Valverde completely cracked too now. Scarponi beast mode. Without all these muritos he would be right up there. Pity that Peña Cabarga next, and he on,y really has three climbs where he can do well.

I doubt he's close to peaking. He's not better than Froome because he's better than he was in the TDF, he's better than Froome because he's closer to his TDF form than Froome is to his.

Edit: Froome doing a bit better than I thought. I had him in the 30-60 seconds range. But I don't think Quintana pushed as hard as he could have.

Disappointed Contador wasn't able to do better, I'm not a fan of his, but any race is better when Contador is at his best (well except when there's no real competition, so it gets boring).

Quintana is unbelievably strong. Maybe he should have done the Giro to avoid being undercooked for the Tour :)

How the hell is Fraile still there? I thought he was dropped when Froome caught Contador
