Except that running up the Ventoux didn't happen due to Portal/Sky influencing the commissaires and The Decision...

My brain doesn't block all of Sagan's great performances, I simply don't watch them. I did therefore forget about that stage in my somewhat hyperbolic opening point, and the stage is mentioned later on (that's the one I meant about Froome in the wind, not the Neeltje Jans stage in 2015).

it will take some epic raids from nairo to win me.

Damn, all your posts recently are either stating how much Contador will crush x rider on x mountain and how much you dislike Quintana. Salty!

Re: 2016 Vuelta a España, Stage 20: Benidorm → Alto de Aitan

This is Quintana's greatest win to date. Congrats to him. Whichever way we slice it or dice it, he was the best, he deserves it. I don't understand all the "what if" or "but" arguments. Beating Dawg is no small feat. So let's give Nairo his props and look forward to his next confrontation with Froome. It's clear now that there's no more Big 4 or Big 3, but only two riders dominating the GTs food chain: Quintana and Froome.

Oh, that's just beyond ridiculous. He's featured in the only three 50km+ leader's jersey attacks the last four years. In the latest of those he was actually wearing said jersey during the attack. They've won him a Giro, a Vuelta, and the closest Tour second place in the last eight years. Dude went on a flat break during the Route the Sud, just because that's his style.
There are more than three. There are in fact more than three involving Nairo, although he wasn't exactly the key man in the fourth.

If you want a better grand tour raider you need to go back to the history books. No one better will likely come along in your lifetime.

Just caught up. Excellent stage. Awesome from Latour and deserved it. Good teamwork from Orica and the best man in the Vuelta goes to the last day in the lead.

Excellent climb to finish.

Probably frustrated Contador isn't doing better considering his spot on predictions every time the race tilts up and Contador is riding, would be my best guess!

Yep, Major Tom was dropped a little under the 50km mark. I actually checked Morcuera, but got mixed up because the stage was a break was a little past that when it happened. Any other instance I'm missing?

Red Rick, that time Froome, Quintana, Valverde and Nibali were just looking at themselves on a valley road. Or, in my mind, the "what if Anacona had pulled a bit more in the break" stage (not that I'm blaming him, BTW). Also, fittingly, the time Quintana took 1:26 off Froome in one stage. About what Chavito took from Contador, or a little more than what Froome needed to take from Quintana, today.

Congrats to Quintana and Moviestar on win - strongest team, but I hope Moviestar send Bertie a case of something good.

Can somebody at BMC teach Atapuma how to sprint?

His gear ratio is fine on long climbs, but it is not on sprints. LOL.

Not only to sprint, but not to attack every god damn 10 seconds when he damn sure knows he can't sustain it. It was the same story in the Giro, but its entertaining.

They could have a started setting a higher tempo when Chavez was taking off but didn't. Quintana owed Contador for his lead but didn't repay the favor. I hope Contador remembers that the next time he drags Quintana into a winning break.

It was ugly. The winner looked like he was dying on the bike for many kms and Atapuma was twirling a ridiculous gear that never seemed to change when he sprinted. Very gutsy win by the French guy but Atapuma misjudged the finish badly.

Yep poor form from Quintana to do that, but did you expect anything else? :p

Pretty much Narios style.

Froome is too classy to do something like that...

Well said! Some short memories here.
Quintana said it after the stage in the interview. "He did it to me several times, and then he said that every second counts, I just wanted to get to the finish first this time, but not a big deal, he is a great Champion and make the Vuelta win that much special. And that includes Contador and Chaves"

Surely you're not comparing that to doing it on the final stage when the race is already over, purely to stick it to the other?

Just finish reading the pages in this thread with the live race and I had a good laugh when a lot of the members called it a failed attack, stupid attack, no chance, what are they thinking, wasting energy.

Chapeau Chaves and Orica. Great ride! He was on his own almost from 16 kms out.
