Kwiatek is an actually sensible pick for surprise of this Vuelta (much more so than MAL). He's got a considerably better palmares than Chaves, Froome etc, but he's not shown a great deal in a GT since the 2014 Tour. He's well rested and the OGRR suggests he's in good climbing form. I doubt he'll win today, but I think he'll keep the red.

Kwiatkowski has never shown anything other than holding on for dear life in the high mountains. He may improve on that yet, but I doubt it will be enough to compete for the win in a Vuelta as this one.

I think at least one of the Sky's will surprise, whether it being Kwito, Pete or Konig. Sky generally give those kinda riders free reigns in La Vuelta, at least early on.

I don't think Dumo should be in that list. He showed that year he could climb allthough not with the best. In most stages he always lost time when it was a mtf, but not much. In the final climbing stage he cracked like a true TT specialist.

Horner showed his entire life some very good climbing skills, but that Vuelta was ofcourse the best and most consistent ever....at the age of 41..

Froome..yeah he came out of nowhere for sure.

Dumoulin should definitely be on the list. Absolutely nobody expected that he could be anywhere near to win it and I remember that when I wrote he could have a chance most people on this forum made fun of my comment. Moreover instead of thinking "they will see that I'm right in a few days" I actually thought "yeah they are right, how stupid was I to think Dumoulin could win the Vuelta" so he really was surprising. :D

Pieter Serry (Etixx-Quick Step), Gatis Smukulis (Katjoesja), Alexandre Geniez (FDJ), Simon Pellaud (IAM), Jérôme Cousin (Cofidis), Rüdiger Selig (Bora-Argon) and David Arroyo (Caja Rural) with 3'30" on the bunch

and from Sporza : We gaan in de Vuelta niet rijden zoals we dat in de Tour gedaan hebben. Toen moesten we absoluut winnen, nu is een podiumplaats al mooi.
Dario Cioni (ploegleider Team Sky)
Cioni has said "that Sky won't ride as it did the TdF, where they had to win, here a podium place would be nice already."

What's this just trowing some sand in the eyes of the other teams?

this sky team is not just strong enough to put the whole race under total control as it happened in the tour. froome himself will be riding it day by day trying to find best possible shape. sounds reasonable.

Speaking of which, Horner climbed 33 sec. faster Pena Cabarga than supersonic uphill sprinting Froome in 2011. This year?

juan antonio flecha saying gerrans has a good chance to win. is he nuts or what?

Gerrans (or my thought - Gilbert) may ride like there's no tomorrow
(Otherwise than GC contenders and domestique riders)
don't think he's crazy
