2017 Giro d'Italia, stage 5: Pedara - Messina 159 km

Ewan has been disadvantaged by Orica dropping his lead out man Kluge a few days before the Giro - Having Mezgec an experienced rider along with Edmondson a second year pro as lead out was a brave decision.

Wait, why isn't Kluge here again then? He seemed pretty instrumental for the TDU sprints iirc though I don't know what's happened since.

what an f'ing idiot.

If you haven't raced then maybe you don't understand the confusion via exhaustion that can take place. I've done it before on laps where I "think" I've heard the bell as have many others. It's funny for the awkward factor, but no need to be insulting.

Who was saying that Gaviria is overrated / over hyped ?
He has won sprints with leadout or by himself (TA 2016), short sprints or long sprints.

He confirms he's one of the top sprinters at a young age

He is one of the top sprinters already, but it's hard for him not to be overrated when some people insist on comparing him to Sagan. Those people are doing him no favors.

Not that I don't believe he can become an outstanding classics/cobbles type rider, I do, but that's just a belief. There's no real evidence yet that that will be the case, and much less so that he will be anywhere near as good as Sagan.

Kluge was pulled out at the last minute for PR and the Giro - Have no idea but Kluge is an unhappy camper - It was Edmondson who lost Postleberger's wheel in the finish of stage 1 - Doubt Mezgec or Kluge would have lost the wheel.

Hopefully the highly anticipated clean sprint between Ewan, Greipel and Gav.

Yes, these guys are the best sprinters here. Nizzolo is hopefully getting into race form to make it a four horse race. I'll go for the Columbian missile.

I don't remember there was a rider from Washington District of Columbia.

He's from British Columbia, actually

At least I finally predicted the winner :)

Good to see Mareczko and Bennett near the front. It looks like Sam is over his food poisoning.

Impressive work from Martinelli and Richeze in the final kilometer. Perfect job for Gaviria and a convincing sprint to finish it off.

Ewan way too passive, staying on the wheel of his (fading) lead-out guy for too long, though he just didn't seem to have the legs.

Think you're reading far too much into those TDU results. Firstly, Ewan was in peak form whilst most of his competition was still rusty. Secondly, in at least two of those TDU stage wins, Ewan managed to lose his man's wheel but was lucky enough (and being in sufficiently better race shape than the others) that he was able to get away with it.

In all honesty, I think people have overstated the Ewan-Kluge combination ...... and the significance/nature of those wins
