Standings

The difference between Gaviria and Degenkolb is enough for Los Brolin to overtake Mellow Velo, in a swap of the top two. The day's winner, Evans Is The Best, moves up from 10th to third, as Pirate91 makes exactly the opposite journey. Del1962 has a 23 place ump to get into the top ten: Kazistuta and Joelsim also get into the top ten, but less dramatically. AG shows the danger of not having a very popular pick on the day he gets 90 points, with a 21 position drop.

That 5th place on the day is enough to bring Just Some Guy to the top of the standings, and Evans is the Best moves up to second. A poor day for the two previous pacesetters, 37th and 43rd (i.e. last) today, but still in the top four. Geraint is the only new entry into the top ten, but just outside it, AG regains almost all of his Degenkolb related places, but is still outstripped for riser of the day by GPBlanco's 20 place advance.

The decisive break held interest for some of the more expensive, and therefore not very popular, picks in the game, but that is what those big gamble selections are all about.

Standings
No change in the top 4: AG's remarkable week courtesy of Gilbert and Naesens lifts him from 30th of Wednesday morning, via 11th, to 5th place. All In's tactic of spending 75% of his budget on Van Avermaet means that he will inevitably soar up the table on any race in which the Olympic Champion scores high, and gradually slips down in every other event: it brings him a 13 place jump this time.

Race 13: Gent-Wevelgem

Of the 5 riders who escaped on that rise out of Ypres, only 3 were on any teams, and only the one who faded most, Kragh Andersen, was on as many as two teams. The chasing sprinters, however, included some popular picks.

Standings

All In's audacious tactic gets him a top ten place, and while the top two stay the same, with the margin between them only slightly reduced, Mellow Velo overhauls Los Brolin to get the bottom step on the virtual podium. AG leaks a couple of places through Degenkolblessness, and DJSprtsch is riser of the day (8 places)

Race 14: Ronde van Vlaanderen

Between us, we selected all of the top 4, but only 10 of the top 30 (and only one of those picked in any numbers), and 33 of the other 91 finishers, getting 5 points each.

AG's faith in Philippe Gilbert is rewarded with a most impressive win, and the biggest haul available on a single race.

Standings

With 2 races left before we enter the phase of the game for which a totally different group of riders are likely to earn points, JSG extends his lead, and AG rises to 2nd place. Mellow Velo was 7th on the day, but still evicted from the podium due to Gilbert's performance. Another leap for GVA-lead All In, but his leap was exceeded by Laarsland (7 places) and Vladimir (8), becauseof the densely grouped part of the field they inhabit.

Shalgo gets a 3 place rise on account of Viviani: other than him, only JSG and Del among the top ten scored at all. Amis Velo, however, somehow gets to jump 4 places midtable because of one 14th place.

Race 16: Paris-Roubaix

If ever the tactic employed by All In could work, GvA has done his best to make it work. But even on the day he wins his biggest race, All In is not top scorer.

The podium were all unique picks, 4th was a much more popular selection. We have 2 more of the top ten, another 7 out of the next ten, 4 more in the top 30, and 21 other 5 pointers.

JSG's lead is pegged back a bit, as Mellow Velo moves from 4th to 2nd. AG and Evans is the Best vacate the podium, Shalgo and All In move up within the top ten, and Laarsland, Pirate81, Hakkie and DJSprtsch joining that esteemed group. Vladimit shares with DJSprtsch the honour of being biggest riser in this race (10 places).

A brief look at the squads suggests that the hillier races have not been a major priority in selections among the teams at the top; The top pair, and Evans is the Best, have Kwiatkowski, All In obviously has Van Avermaet, and AG has Gilbert, but scoring in the last few races tends to be low. Here's the spreadsheet at Dropbox if you can find the riders who might yet make a difference.

After the Flandrian style race that is not in Flanders, the Ardennes style race that is not in the Ardennes: Brabantse Pijl on Wednesday.

Race 17: Brabantse Pijl

As an HC race, this had 30 riders who got points. Between us, we selected 9 of them: the highest placed being very popular, the others being on no more than 2 teams each.

BENOOT Tiesj 3rd, 72 points for 26 teams
LINDEMAN Bert-Jan 5th, 54 pts for Scrool07
DILLIER Silvan 8th, 36pts for Joelsim and Laarsland
DE PLUS Laurens 10th, 26pts for All In and Shalgo

The biggest scorer was near ubiquitous, and lesser scorers rare picks, so not a great difference brought about today, but the podium has changed, with Benoot-less Mellow Velo falling from 2nd, overtaken by Shalgo and All In (also without Benoot, but with De Plus), Togo95 sneaks into the top ten, and Joelsim is top riser.

Cool! It is nice to be in second, but it is hard to imagine a path to victory, or even for staying on the podium, compared to the teams with Kwiatkowski or Gilbert.

But it is certainly a fun game to try to put together the right combination of riders with such a variety of types of races on the schedule.

I have just noticed this afternoon that the GP de Denain is now HC category, as it was last year, and so should have been included in the game both then and this year.

Luckily, the highest placed rider that any of us picked was in 17th place:

HOELGAARD Daniel 17th, 9 non-points for Archieboy, DJW, Kjellus, Leadbelly, Los Brolin and NotMyCircus
BOIVIN Guillaume 23rd, 5 points snatched away from AupaPayama
DANIEL Maxime 26th, another 5 points cruelly stolen from NotMyCircus
CORBEL Erwann 27th, 5 points denied to Armchair Cyclist and Del1962

The highest placed affected team is in 13th place.

If any of the above teams feel that the points deprived by the non-inclusion of this race would have made a substantial difference to their chances of making up the several hundred points between them and the top of the table, thus depriving them of a shot at the extensive prize-pool, they can send me a stamped address envelope and I shall refund their entry fee in rusty 2p coins.

(Last year I had Thomas Boudat as a unique pick, and he came 2nd in this race)

Race 18: Amstel Gold

We did better than we often do in the Ardennes races, with the top 4 all selected and some big points for those near the top of the table.

GILBERT Philippe 1st, 220pts for AG
KWIATKOWSKI Michal 2nd, 132pts for 7 teams
ALBASINI Michael 3rd, 112 for Comodoro and DJW
HAAS Nathan 4th, 96 for AupaPyama, Del1962, Kazistuta and NotMyCircus
VAN AVERMAET Greg 12th, 35pts for All In
BENOOT Tiesj 14th, 27pts for 26 teams
LANGEVELD Sebastian 20th, 16 for DJSprtsch
FELLINE Fabio 29th, 7pts for 3 teams
and 15 of the 73 fivers.

6 of the top 9 are among the 7 teams with Kwiatkowski: the other three are AG (who has Gilbert and moved up to 2nd place), Shalgo (whose best finisher today was Benoot and falls from 2nd to 5th) and All In, with a Van Avermaet based team and a four place drop to 7th). Los Brolin is the other Kwiatkowski owner, but his Degenkolb-free status has limited his total score, but he at least got the biggest (8 place) rise. Kazistuta and Del1962 are new in the top ten.

I guess it is all down to what else Phil Gilbert has up his sleeve for the last two races as to whether the game is over or not. unless the spreadsheet points you to other possibilities.

So it appears that CQ put up a set of results that excluded many finishers, including Naesen who should have got 30 points each for the top two (Just Some Guy and AG) and also for ChrisDK. There were also five extra selected finishers, one of whom meant that The Pirate, not Hakkie, is in the top ten, and the gap between AG (who was top scorer on the day, not 2nd) and third place overall is now 100 points. Points for Benoot, Langeveld and Felline are lower when account is finally made of those who finished above them.

I checked whether the results in 17 previous races had been revised, but the only relevant difference is 5 points fewer for ChrisDK as CQ now have it that Gijs Van Hoecke, rather than Robert Wagner (as originally reported), finished 57th in Gent-Wevelgem.

With today's news of Gilbert being out of the rest of the week's races, I guess JSG looks virtually uncatchable.

Race 19: Fleche Wallonne

The first two finishers were too pricey to be realistic picks for this game, but the previously disappointing fairly popular pick who took the last podium spot has turned himself into a very worthwhile buy.

Kazistuta (courtesy of Kwiatkowski, Teuns, Haas and Benoot) has been the post-cobble star: he was 12th after Paris Roubaix, now up to 2nd. But nearly 200 pts adrift: he would need Kwiatkowski to fail, and something way beyond expectation from his other three to close that gap. The battle for the podium is still live though.

DJW has an 11 place improvement, but like many of us, too little too late.

Just Some Guy took the lead after race 11 (Dwars voor Vlaanderen), and has stayed there ever since.
Kazistuta hung on for 2nd, and top score on the day gets Mellow Velo, just, onto the podium. A final burst gats Los Brolin into the final top ten. The consolation to those in the crowded mid-table that is a mention as top riser of the day, is shared this final time by Comodoro and DJW.

The Spring season has been dominated by 5 riders:
Sagan (who was beyond a team budget)
Valverde (much of his dominance was in stage races and therefore no advantage here, and he would have been a very expensive pick given that these races are not his main source of points),
Van Avermaet (who seemed prohibitively expensive, but one team didn't think so)
Gilbert (who proved a very good unique pick)
and Kwiatkowski (by far the best value of these in points/cost balance, and chosen by all the top 4)

The top ten consists of the teams that had Van Avermaet and Gilbert as unique picks, the 7 teams with Kwiatkowski, and Shalgo, who managed 7th place without any of the big 5.

Congratulations to JSG on his win, and to Kazistuta and Mellow Velo for their podium positions; thanks to everyone else for your interest and participation.

Here is the spreadsheet on Dropbox if you want to do any further analysis, see where your team went wrong, or see if you can calculate a better best possible team.

I should have had GP de Denain as part of the game: it was 1.HC but I hadn't noticed its promotion. None of the 1.1 races this year met my threshhold of having 6 WT teams competing (poss because of other races having been promoted to WT), so I envisage none of them being in the game next year, so it is due to be the 17 1.HC or above races, and possibly any others that get date shifted into the scope of the game (as Lugano date shifted out of it this year). If you have any proposals otherwise, let's hear them.

I have a best possible team of 3351 points so far. Cost is 2988 points, so maybe minor improvements are still possible.
